The community branch of English football club Tranmere Rovers has launched an esports and digital skills initiative designed to open career pathways for 18 to 21-year-olds.

The six-week course will utilise esports to develop a range of skills, including broadcast production and content creation.

Unveiled on February 25th, the initiative is described as ‘a dynamic way to develop practical digital skills that employers value.’ Over the six weeks, participants will aim to connect their interests with a career pathway to make learning relevant and aspirational.

The programme is open to all 18-21-year-olds who aren’t in education, employment or training and will take place at the football club’s dedicated esports facility located at Prenton Park stadium.

In addition to broadcast production and content creation, the initiative covers a range of IT and digital skills, along with teamwork and communication. Esports regularly requires high levels of coordination, whether it’s competing in tournaments or operating a business.

Tranmere Rovers is no stranger to the world of esports. In 2022, the club unveiled a five-year plan that included the launch of an esports BTEC, the creation of a facility, and the formation of an esports team. Competing under the name Tranmere Vikings, the club fields players in EA Sports FC.

Football Clubs and Esports

Football clubs and their respective projects continue to use esports and gaming as a tool to engage the local community. Alongside Tranmere Rovers, the likes of Manchester City have created a range of initiatives to offer learning opportunities.

In July 2024, City in the Community joined forces with Oldham College to launch Level 2 and Level 3 esports BTEC courses, covering a variety of titles and topics. The programme also aims to provide students with development and networking opportunities to help them pursue a career within the esports industry.

Now in the third year of its five-year plan, Tranmere Rovers remains committed to developing a community-focused presence within esports, alongside providing young people with opportunities to engage in initiatives that will improve their skillsets.
