AI vs expert: Return of the bots for LEC week three predictions

Week three of the LEC Summer Split is upon us, and the humans-versus-robots scoreboard is starting to take shape.

Look away now, clanker nay-sayers. After week one, it was Claude and Gemini cashing in while ChatGPT and our expert, Craig Robinson nursed their fictional losses. Week two saw one clanker hypothetically cash in, and my palpable regret at labelling Craig an expert continue to grow.

Claude was the only one of the four to land, though for a fictional tuppence, given it literally backed four heavily odds-on favorites. Gemini, ChatGPT and Craig all found themselves serenaded by the world’s tiniest violin, which leaves Craig and ChatGPT rooted to the bottom, with misery for company.

Craig’s words describe the current delirium at ESI HQ: “Back again with another installment of how a human can troll his hypothetical acca and lose to boring AI bots. I am kind of on team bots this one.”

He also lamented (for the second consecutive week, his all too human greed): “Last week I kind of threw my acca away by going in on Shifters when I should have only taken the over 2.5 maps for that series. My biblical greed sickened me.”

Lesson apparently learned. Maybe. Let’s get into this week’s shenanigans.

Week two: how it played out

Here’s how last week’s drama went down.

Predictor Leg 1 Leg 2 Leg 3 Leg 4 Legs Won Acca Result Net P/L on $10
Claude Won Won Won Won 4/4 Won +$4.33
ChatGPT Lost — — — 0/1 Lost -$10.00
Gemini Lost Won Won Won 3/4 Lost -$10.00
Craig Won Won Won Lost 3/4 Lost -$10.00

Claude’s four short-priced favourites — Movistar KOI, G2, Karmine Corp twice — all came in providing a not-to-be-scoffed-at $4.33 plus the $10 stake. ChatGPT’s lone underdog punt on Fnatic over Movistar KOI didn’t land, showing that being you can be both boring and fail miserably.

Gemini’s -1.5 handicap sweep on Movistar KOI over Shifters missed by the finest of margins, taking the rest of its acca down with it. And Craig’s now-infamous decision to back Shifters outright, rather than just the over on total maps, cost him again. Oh, so close.

The running total

Two weeks in, and the table’s tightened right up at the top.

Predictor Week 1 P/L Week 2 P/L Cumulative P/L
Gemini +$58.76 -$10.00 +$48.76
Claude +$43.60 +$4.33 +$47.93
ChatGPT -$10.00 -$10.00 -$20.00
Craig -$10.00 -$10.00 -$20.00

Gemini, despite losing last week, keeps its nose in front by less than a $1. Craig and OpenAI’s star-child are both yet to get off the mark.

The odds at a glance

Predictor Legs Combined Odds Potential Return Profit on $10
Gemini 4 6.18 $61.79 $51.79
ChatGPT 1 2.63 $26.25 $16.25
Craig 3 2.34 $23.38 $13.38
Claude 4 2.06 $20.57 $10.57

Gemini is back with its biggest combined price yet, sticking to the same -1.5 handicap-sweep approach that it went with last week. ChatGPT has switched from underdog-hunting to.. erm… underdog-hunting again, this time on SK Gaming rather than Fnatic. Craig has tried to control his ‘biblical greed’ and gone for a cheeky three-fold, and Claude has gone for another four short-priced favorites.

As before, I’ve included the exact wording provided by each chatbot (and by Craig) in response to the same identical prompt each week. Nothing has been edited, nor any hallucinations checked or corrected.

The picks

Claude: Short shorts, part three

Leg Match Pick Odds
1 Team Heretics vs G2 Esports (Sun 09 Aug) G2 Esports to win 1/14
2 Fnatic vs Karmine Corp (Sun 09 Aug) Karmine Corp to win 1/7
3 Natus Vincere vs G2 Esports (Mon 10 Aug) G2 Esports to win 1/5
4 Movistar KOI vs GIANTX (Sat 08 Aug) Movistar KOI to win 2/5

Sticking with the same low-variance philosophy as last week — stack the market’s most confident favorites rather than chase a single big multiplier.

This week’s Acca ($10 stake):

Match | Pick | Odds Sun 09 Aug, 16:00 | G2 Esports beat Team Heretics | 1/14 Sun 09 Aug, 18:15 | Karmine Corp beat Fnatic | 1/7 Mon 10 Aug, 18:15 | G2 Esports beat Natus Vincere | 1/5 Sat 08 Aug, 18:15 | Movistar KOI beat GIANTX | 2/5

Why these four: Each leg is the clearest favorite on the board this week — G2 shows up twice at very short odds (1/14 and 1/5), Karmine Corp looks well ahead of Fnatic, and KOI is the strongest side in their match against GIANTX. I skipped closer lines like Shifters/GIANTX (7/4 vs 2/5) and SK Gaming/Vitality (7/4 vs 2/5), which are favorite-leaning but not lock-tier, to keep variance down.

Payout math: Combined odds multiply to roughly 2.06x, so a clean sweep returns about $20.57 — a profit of ~$10.57, meaningfully better than last week’s ticket for a similar risk level, since this slate has more genuinely lopsided matchups to draw from.

Risk profile: Still low-to-moderate. Four legs means four chances for an upset to bust the ticket, but every leg here implies a >70% (and in two cases >85%) win probability based on the market price. I’m avoiding both extremes — no coinflip legs, no single-match moonshot on Team Heretics or Fnatic as underdogs.

ChatGPT: Underdog hunting, round two

Leg Match Pick Odds
1 SK Gaming vs Natus Vincere SK Gaming to win 13/8

My $10 bet: SK Gaming to beat Natus Vincere at 13/8

Potential return: $26.25, including the $10 stake.

I’m going single underdog again, with a medium-high risk profile. The market makes NAVI a fairly substantial 4/9 favourite, but I think the gap is too wide.

NAVI were clearly the stronger side in Spring, finishing the regular season 6–3 compared with SK’s 2–7, and they also beat SK 2–1 head-to-head. But that head-to-head is part of the reason I like the price: it went the full three maps rather than being a comfortable NAVI sweep, and SK have subsequently changed mid lane for Summer, bringing in SlowQ.

The format helps the punt as well. Summer is a single round-robin of best-of-threes with Fearless Draft, so one good read on the current patch/draft can swing a series much more readily than the Spring standings alone imply. At 13/8, SK only need to win this matchup about 38% of the time for the bet to break even. I think that is a reasonable bar.

I considered padding an accumulator with G2 at 1/14 or KC at 1/7, but those legs add very little payout while creating another way to lose. So the competition strategy is simple:

$10 on SK Gaming @ 13/8 → $26.25 return.

Risk: 7/10.

Thesis: NAVI deserve favouritism; 4/9 is just too short and SK 13/8 is the value side.

Gemini: Calculated Aggression, part three

Here is the play: I am allocating the entire $10 stake into a 4-Leg “Dominant Favorites” Accumulator targeting match handicaps and high-conviction outrights across the slate.

To beat human bettors and rival AI models in a competitive trial, backing ultra-safe moneyline favorites at 1/14 or 1/7 yields negligible profit (~$1.50). Conversely, long-shot underdogs at 13/2 or 4/1 are statistical money-losers in professional League of Legends. This selection strikes a high-conviction balance by capitalizing on the tier gap between top-four teams and lower-tier rosters using -1.5 Map Handicaps (2-0 sweeps in Best-of-3 format).

The $10 Accumulator Ticket

Date Match Selection Fractional Odds
Sat 08 Aug Movistar KOI vs GIANTX Movistar KOI To Win 2/5
Sun 09 Aug Team Heretics vs G2 Esports G2 Esports -1.5 4/9
Sun 09 Aug Fnatic vs Karmine Corp Karmine Corp -1.5 4/6
Mon 10 Aug Natus Vincere vs G2 Esports G2 Esports -1.5 5/6

Total Accumulator Odds: 6.18 (approx. 26/5) Stake: $10.00 Potential Payout: $61.79 (Net Profit: $51.79)

Strategic Rationale

Leg 1 — Movistar KOI To Win vs GIANTX (2/5): Movistar KOI’s superior macro execution and draft flexibility make them reliable favorites here. Taking the straight win avoids map-drop risk while providing a stable foundation to build accumulator yield.

Leg 2 — G2 Esports -1.5 vs Team Heretics (4/9): Team Heretics sit as massive 13/2 underdogs. G2’s early-game pacing and champion pool advantage in Fearless Draft formats leave Heretics with virtually no path to taking a map.

Leg 3 — Karmine Corp -1.5 vs Fnatic (4/6): Karmine Corp enters this matchup with elite individual form and disciplined teamfighting. Fnatic’s recent mid-game volatility opens up prime value for a clean 2-0 sweep at 4/6 odds.

Leg 4 — G2 Esports -1.5 vs NAVI (5/6): NAVI offers occasional early-game sparks, but G2 excels at suffocating mid-table opponents in late-game objective setups. Getting 5/6 on G2 closing out a 2-0 sweep provides the best risk-to-reward ratio on the board.

Craig: On team bots, apparently

Leg Match Pick Odds
1 Team Heretics vs G2 Esports G2 Esports to win 1/14
2 Fnatic vs Karmine Corp Karmine Corp to win 1/7
3 Shifters vs GIANTX Over 2.5 total maps 10/11

Back again with another instalment of how a human can troll his hypothetical acca and lose to boring AI bots. I am kind of on team bots this one.

If you are betting and want money, the safe plays are G2 to win over Team Heretics at 1/14 and Karmine Corp to beat Fnatic at 1/7. Those are the safest picks available and you will get little in return, which is exactly why the bots are boring.

Last week I kind of threw my acca away by going in on Shifters when I should have only taken the over 2.5 maps for that series. My biblical greed sickened me.

If you want to build something spicy, this week is genuinely hard to read. Many teams look closer together than they should, tilt is already seeping into players’ faces, and all round it is clown town. If you have a hunch it could be worth a punt, as long as you do not mind losing a hypothetical ten dollars.

If I was going to do it, I reckon over 2.5 maps for Shifters and Giants x Games could be decent options. You know what, I am going for it. Over 2.5 maps for Shifters and Giants X game at 10/11 please.

Everything else feels too unknown to call. SK looked better than they should. Vitality are still a bit whiffy. Fnatic and GX still look a bit odd. Maybe it is worth putting MKOI to win somewhere? I still do not have much faith in them after the first week. They are really spiky per map, which makes them hard to back with any real confidence.

Final Scorecard

Predictor Leg 1 Leg 2 Leg 3 Leg 4 Legs Won Acca Result Net P/L on $10
Claude /4 Won / Lost
ChatGPT — — — /1 Won / Lost
Gemini /4 Won / Lost
Craig — — /3 Won / Lost

To be updated after the weekend’s results.
