The Witcher 3 Songs of the Past Expansion Confirmed to Include More Gwent, and Everyone Is Already Celebrating

CD Projekt Red has confirmed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt‘s upcoming Songs of the Past expansion will come with more Gwent, and card game lovers are already celebrating.

The Witcher 3 earned a lot of praise when it launched back in 2015. While Doug Cockle‘s gravelly delivery as Geralt helped sell its story, and its RPG gameplay quickly hooked in every kind of fantasy fan, many would say Gwent was what truly kept them coming back for more.

“In Gwent, gamers clash with friends in fast-paced duels that combine skill-based play with bluffing, and careful deck construction,” an official description from CD Projekt Red says. “The game is played over a best-of-three series of rounds, as players unleash their hand by slinging spells and diverse units with special abilities, and use clever tricks to deceive their opponents.”

CD Projekt Red’s in-universe card game first launched within the third installment in its Witcher series before being transformed into a standalone spinoff in 2017 and a real-life tabletop experience in 2025. It’s a formula others have unsuccessfully attempted to mimic, but few have managed to stand the test of time quite like Gwent. That’s probably exactly why it will be making a comeback when the developer returns to The Witcher 3 with its Songs of the Past expansion in 2027.

CD Projekt Red community and social media manager Marcin Łukaszewski teased the return of the fan-favorite side activity when replying to a player on X/Twitter. When the fan said they hoped more Gwent would be included in the surprise expansion, Łukaszewski offered a simple reply: “Confirmed!”

It’s been more than 10 years since The Witcher 3’s last expansion, Blood and Wine, came out in 2016, and by the time Songs of the Past launches next year, that wait will have been even longer. CD Projekt Red has teased that this is a full-fledged add-on for the game’s story, teasing earlier this year that it will serve as a prologue. In other words, don’t expect it to be all Gwent all the time, but for those who have waited to sit down for another round of tabletop challenges, it sounds like there’s already more than enough reason to be excited.

Well, I hope whatever the main plot of Songs of the Past is, it’s not urgent.

Because Geralt’s got more Gwenting to do, baby!#Witcher3 https://t.co/IT8PwXY6lZ pic.twitter.com/10vnDoF1gR

IGN called The Witcher 3 “Amazing” in our original 9.3/10 review. We said, “Massive in size, and meticulously detailed, The Witcher 3 ends Geralt’s story on a high note.” There’s plenty more monster hunting to be had as far as CD Projekt Red is concerned, as just earlier today, the studio confirmed The Witcher 4 is on track to launch sometime in 2028.

As for Songs of the Past, we already know that it won’t be much longer before we hear more. In fact, news on the expansion is less than 24 hours away, as the developers have already made plans to share more about it during gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live. While we wait to see what’s up CD Projekt Red’s sleeve, you can read about The Witcher 3 NPCs who just couldn’t stop dropping their babies.
