Overwatch Season 5’s midcycle just arrived, and in addition to all of the hero balance changes, one of the maps received an interesting visual update. Here is what’s going on with the Blizzard World map in Overwatch.
Overwatch Blizzard World map hints at new update
Overwatch Season 5’s midcycle arrived on Nov. 3 with a visual update to the Blizzard World map. Right near the first capture point, there’s a green tarp with text that reads, “Work, work… forging something legendary.”
Meanwhile, the image on the tarp is a murloc in a hard hat. Murlocs are from the World of Warcraft universe, which this part of the Blizzard World map references a lot. For example, the Snaxxramus building to the left of our screenshot pays tribute to the Naxxramas dungeon. Of course, the “work, work” part of the tarp is a reference to what orc peons say in Warcraft and World of Warcraft.
Other references include the Flight of Duskwood ride featuring Alliance Gryphons, Horde banners off in the distance, and, if you listen very closely in our exact spot in the screenshot below, the Lion’s Pride theme.
There’s another murloc in a hard hat to the right of the green tarp as well. This one has a “Coming soon” speech bubble that is similar to the ones in Hearthstone.
Overwatch Blizzard World rework
At the time of publishing this article, it’s unclear if these murlocs are hinting at a Blizzard World rework in Overwatch or something else entirely. However, something World of Warcraft-related is a possibility just based on the location of these hints.
This isn’t Overwatch’s first time dropping hints prior to a major update, either. The game uses a lot of environmental storytelling such as Juno’s ship landing in Dorado, Watchpoint: Gibraltar being on fire because of Talon’s attack, and Moira’s vanadium isotope at Oasis University foreshadowing Hazard’s arrival.
