Wardogs Season 2 is adding a new gambling system that will allow players to bet on their own performances.
The new season of Wardogs, due to launch on October 15, features a bunch of new content, most notably a new weather system that adds rain to matches. Another major mechanic lets players win big, or lose tons of cash. It’s called the Wager Vendor, and it allows players to bet on themselves. If you think you can kill 20 people in a match, make a bet, and you will be rewarded. However, if you fail, you will lose cash. The harder your challenge is, the more you stand to win.
Speaking exclusively to IGN about the new system, developer Bulkhead noted that it technically won’t be available to players as soon as the season launches, as they’ll have to unlock it by building up cash.
“The Wager Vendor basically lets you bet on your own performance,” said Bulkhead co-founder Howard Philpott. “So if I want to go in and say, ‘I’m going to get 20 kills this match,’ you then set that in your Wager Vendor, you then set the condition so I can say, ‘Oh, I need to go and kill 20 people with my fists.’ Okay, that’s a bit harder, but that’s when the odds go up. And then you set that as a condition and you can add multiple conditions.”
“If you’re a really good player and you’re really smart about building your wager, you can make big money, but you can also lose big money,” added senior producer Kane Allard.
Players can get pretty specific with these wagers. However, the more restrictions you put on yourself, the harder it will be to accomplish.
“Conditions-wise, it can even go down to as minute as, ‘I need to get five kills, they’re all head shots, all with the AK74M, and they all have to be in the hot zone, and my loadout has to cost less than 20K,'” said Allard. “You can build that wager and you can maybe earn double of what you put down, but that’s a lot of restrictions that you’re putting on yourself, and there’s going to be players that may be also trying the same thing, and it just adds a little bit more tension to the game.”
This not only spices up the gameplay, but it can also be extremely rewarding for players who are trying to build up some cash. If you’re playing medic, you could theoretically give yourself a bonus for reviving 30 players. This then incentivizes medics to help their team more. It’ll be intersting to see how this changes player behavior, but it sounds like it could be a lot of fun.
Call of Duty had a far less detailed version of this system in 2010’s Call of Duty: Black Ops. Players could unlock items with an in-game currency and go into high stakes party games, such as Gun Game and One in the Chamber, to try and earn more money. GTA Online also has a betting system, allowing players to bet on players they think will perform best in PvP modes.
