While I’ve bemoaned the expensive state of handheld gaming PCs at length, that doesn’t mean I find a cool concept model any less head-turning. Enter Acer’s latest Project DualPlay creation: a handheld gaming PC with a flippable screen that can turn into a laptop.
The Project DualPlay Mini was shown off on-stage at IFA 2026, in Berlin. It’s all about reimagining “what a gaming handheld form factor can do,” exploring a design that functions “both as a gaming handheld and as a mobile productivity station,” according to Acer. As a concept machine, however, the Project DualPlay Mini might not see the light of day beyond the IFA stage. What will see a wide release later this year, though, is the Acer Predator Atlas 7.
Very simply, this is a cut-down version of Acer’s chunkier Predator Atlas 8 handheld. For starters, the seven-inch touchscreen still enjoys a 120 Hz refresh rate and 500 nits of peak brightness. The device also has an 80Whr battery, and the guts of this new seven-inch form factor still includes Intel Arc B390 graphics, and an Intel Arc G3 Extreme processor. In other words, it’s got all of the power, but less of the heft.
It will be available in winter 2026, though the price hasn’t yet been announced. For context though, the Predator Atlas 8 ranges in price between $1,300 to $2,000, and I’m not expecting the Atlas 7 to be priced much differently. With the smaller handheld featuring up to 24 GB LPDDR5x, whatever price is eventually announced will likely be another victim of the raging memory supply crisis.
Even if it could well burn your budget upon release, the Predator Atlas 7’s cooling system aims not to burn your fingies too. Like its big sibling, the Atlas 7 enjoys a Predator AeroBlade cooling system, comprising of one plastic fan and one, thinner finned, metal fan (the same system can be found in the Project DualPlay Mini concept machine too). Acer says the metal Predator AeroBlade fan features, “89 blades at just 0.1 mm of thickness” and claims this design delivers an “up to a 10% increase in airflow.”
To summarise, the Acer Predator Atlas 7 is ‘same, but different.’ With handheld pricing being what it is, my excitement is decidedly tempered. The Project DualPlay Mini is definitely cooler, and arguably the brightest idea we’ve seen from Acer’s concept line in a minute (anyone remember this laptop with the pop-out, Joycon-like gamepad?). But the flippable screen would leave me wondering about the longevity of the device overall, so perhaps it’s just as well it’s not destined for a store shelf near you.
