BLAST Open Porto 2026 could be the most open CS tournament of the year so far, and I can’t wait

As the dust settles on the Esports World Cup, the eyes of the Counter-Strike 2 esports circuit turn towards BLAST Open Porto 2026, the next stop in a hugely populated Tier 1 calendar. With 13 of the 16 teams committing to the incredibly short turnaround, the stage is set for another enthralling tournament. 

With several powerhouse rosters experiencing a downturn in form and underdog sides building momentum, BLAST Open Porto has the ingredients required to be the most unpredictable tournament of the year. 

The highest tier of Counter-Strike is experiencing a changing of the guard following Team Vitality’s recent dominance. With the hierarchy showing signs of falling apart, several variables will make BLAST Open Porto 2026 a must-watch esports event.

When a single roster is winning everything there is to win, the sole storyline heading into a tournament is whether another team can bring their reign of dominance to an end. The esports industry relies on fans buying tickets and tuning in online, and an unpredictable event plays a huge role in getting people to watch the entire tournament instead of just the Grand Final.  

The IEM Cologne Major is an excellent example of this. While many expected Team Vitality to defend its Budapest Major crown, Team Falcons emerged victorious, vindicating the signing of Finn “Karrigan” Andersen from FaZe Clan and cementing Nikola “NiKo” Kovac’s place as one of the greatest riflers of all time. 

Team Falcons’ surprising exit from EWC at the hands of Legacy demonstrates why Porto is so difficult to predict. The defeat shows the Major champions are vulnerable to underdog sides competing with everything to gain. Even as a team packed full of quality, the Falcons head into the Group Stage with big questions hanging over their head.

Having followed the Counter-Strike scene for several years, I’ve never known a tournament where there are so many different talking points. Is the Team Vitality era over? Is Team Spirit the new benchmark in Tier 1? Can the underdogs usurp the established names?

With each match fuelling various narratives, a lot is riding on the results as focus shifts towards qualification for the PGL Singapore Major.

Everyone loves an underdog story. Watching a team emerge from complete obscurity and contend with the household names is always a sight to behold, and for BLAST Porto 2026, there’s a genuine chance for some unfamiliar teams to cement their place at the top of Tier 1 Counter-Strike. 

One of Counter-Strike’s biggest strengths is that the lesser-known teams have the potential to stand on the top step of the podium. Extensive preparation, a superior map veto, or a breakout performance from an individual player can result in a team of relative unknowns finding themselves on the cusp of an upset victory.

EWC saw the pair of FUT Esports and Legacy make deep runs through a heavily one-sided playoff bracket. FUT even gave eventual winners Team Spirit a run for its money in the Grand Final, opening up the best-of-five with a victory on Cache. Legacy also made its case to become the best team emanating from South America, sweeping aside Team Falcons and defeating FURIA in the third-place match.

Despite some sections of the community and the bookmakers still deeming them as outsiders with little chance of lifting a trophy, there’s a very real chance of FUT, Legacy, and others appearing in the latter stages of a tournament once again. 

As a result of the same teams finding success on multiple occasions, the majority of Tier 1 tournaments often blur into one. An unpredictable scene gives a tournament a sense of identity instead of being just another event where the same two teams face off in the Grand Final. 

Team Vitality heads into BLAST Open Porto 2026 with Justinas “jL” Lekavicius acting as a temporary stand-in for William ‘Mezii’ Merriman, who is taking paternity leave. Even with a substitute, the growing consensus from fans is that the team’s period of total domination is coming to an end.

“This lineup will not dominate again,” claims one fan. “Everything runs its course eventually. This is clearly Vitality getting worse more than other teams getting better.”

As the sun seemingly sets on one era, the rosters that always made it to the final four now find themselves in a position where they are no longer untouchable. 

The main appeal of BLAST Open Porto 2026 is that we already know which teams have started the second half of the season on the front foot. We know who’s good, but we don’t know who’s going to end it by hoisting the trophy aloft. 

Competing in a scene where only a handful of organizations have a realistic chance of winning isn’t an attractive long-term prospect for any new entities looking to field a roster. If the likes of FUT Esports, Legacy, and Magic can continue showcasing their skills against the big names, it shows that there is a return on investment for organizations potentially considering a move into Valve’s first-person shooter.

The big names have invested heavily in superstar signings, and despite spending big, it doesn’t always translate to success on the big stage. 

Picture this. FUT Esports goes on to win in Porto after finishing as runners-up at EWC. The stocks of players previously known for their time representing NAVI Academy skyrocket in value. Suddenly, the likes of Mykyta “cmtry” Samolotov and Dmytro “dem0n” Myroshnychenko are in the same conversations as Maksim “kyousuke” Lukin and Danil “Donk” Kryshkovets. 

BLAST Open Porto 2026 is more than just another Tier 1 tournament. It sets the stage for the remainder of the year. For several teams, it’s a chance to move into the conversation alongside the biggest names. For others, it’s an opportunity to ensure they remain at the top of the mountain heading into Major season.
