I’ve been reviewing TVs for the better part of five years now, and few lineups have impressed me as consistently as Samsung’s S90-series. Having tested several generations of the OLED, it’s become the TV I most often recommend to buyers who want flagship OLED performance and don’t mind giving up Dolby Vision. Year after year, Samsung has found ways to squeeze more out of the mid-range panel without reinventing the formula, making the S90 line one of the safest bets in premium TVs, particularly for gamers.
The Samsung S90H OLED TV doesn’t stray far from that winning blueprint, but that’s hardly a criticism. Building on last year’s model with a brighter, more refined panel, a 165Hz refresh rate borrowed from last year’s flagship Samsung S95F OLED TV, and all the gaming features you’d expect from a modern OLED, it’s another incredibly capable all-rounder. The biggest hurdle this time is price. At $1,699 for the 55-inch model I tested, the S90H is a significant investment in a time when saving is utterly crucial. Fortunately, after spending several weeks with the set across movies, streaming, and gaming, I came away convinced the improvements are substantial enough to justify the premium.
Samsung S90H – Setup & Design
Samsung’s TV setup was always fairly simple, but it’s been streamlined into a total breeze. The dual feet simply slide into place and lock without the need for a screwdriver or any additional tools, making it one of the easiest TVs I’ve assembled in recent memory. You then simply pop on the pedestal part to the feet and it’s good to stand up on your entertainment system, but I would’ve appreciated a few more built-in cable management touches around the back.
Once powered on, Samsung’s SmartThings app handles most of the heavy lifting. Pairing the TV to Wi-Fi, signing into Samsung services, and connecting compatible devices takes just a few moments all on your smartphone, eliminating much of the usual setup friction. It’s the kind of process that gets you watching content instead of tapping through endless menus. I also love that you can upload and save your home page settings, so if you ever need to upgrade or already live inside the Samsung ecosystem, everything is right there for you on startup.
The 55-inch S90H model I tested is remarkably slim and surprisingly light at around 38 pounds (17.3 kg) with its stand attached, making it easy enough for one person to maneuver during setup. The chassis measures just under 1.6 inches thick at its deepest point, giving it an elegant profile whether it’s sitting on a media console or mounted to a wall.
Around the front, Samsung keeps distractions to a minimum. The bezels aren’t completely invisible, but they’re thin enough to disappear once content starts playing. The overall design feels understated rather than flashy. It lets the panel be the star of the show, which is exactly what an OLED should do, and even more impressive is that anti-glare matte finish that cuts through nasty reflections with ease.
Powering everything is Samsung’s NQ4 AI Gen3 Processor, which handles 4K AI Upscaling Pro, motion processing, and Samsung’s suite of AI picture enhancements. Navigation throughout Tizen feels as snappy as ever, apps launch without hesitation, and switching between HDMI inputs is quick. The Tizen OS has seen several improvements, which makes navigation so much simpler. More importantly, the processor never feels like it’s getting in the way – it keeps the interface responsive while leaving you free to decide how much of Samsung’s image processing you actually want enabled.
Samsung has also quietly improved Tizen over the past few generations. Gone is the older side-panel interface, replaced by a cleaner home screen that keeps apps, inputs, and settings organized across the top of the display. It still takes a little time to learn where everything lives, but once you do, navigation feels faster and far less cluttered than it used to. My only real annoyance is Samsung’s optional Daily Board and Ambient features, which can greet you with weather updates and smart home information whenever you walk by the display. It’s a clever idea, but one that can feel unnecessary if you’re walking through the living room a lot.
How I Tested
I tested the 55-inch Samsung S90H OLED over the course of several days using a mix of movies, games, and calibration software. Alongside everyday viewing, I measured the TV using Datacolor’s SpyderPro in four configurations: Standard Mode (SDR), Filmmaker Mode (SDR), Standard Mode (HDR), and Filmmaker Mode (HDR). Testing focused on brightness, contrast, white point, gamma/EOTF tracking, color gamut coverage, and Delta-E color accuracy to compare Samsung’s default image processing against its creator-focused picture mode.
For real-world performance, I paired the TV with a Panasonic DP-UB820-K 4K Blu-ray player for physical media, a PlayStation 5 Pro, gaming PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, while also evaluating streaming content through Samsung’s built-in Tizen platform. Movies spanning modern HDR releases, classic DVDs, and streamed content helped evaluate everything from HDR presentation and OLED black levels to upscaling and motion handling.
Picture quality
The Samsung S90H OLED is a reminder that impressive hardware doesn’t always translate into an impressive out-of-the-box experience. Beneath Samsung’s processing sits an outstanding OLED panel capable of exceptional contrast, rich color, and plenty of brightness, but its default Eco and Standard picture modes are the biggest culprits behind the disappointing image quality many first-time buyers may experience.
If you simply unbox the TV and leave everything at its defaults, the S90H delivers the kind of image Samsung has become known for on showroom floors: bright, vivid, and immediately attention-grabbing. During testing, Standard Mode reached 411.8 nits in SDR, proving the S90H isn’t shy with its luminance. The problem is that Samsung aggressively manipulates nearly every aspect of the image.
The most obvious example is white balance. As brightness increased, the measured white point climbed from 8,900K at the lowest setting to an icy 11,900K at full brightness. Since films, television, and games are typically mastered around the D65 reference point of roughly 6,500K, that shift introduces an increasingly cool, blue-tinted image – something Samsung users may know all too well. Whites lose their neutrality, skin tones become less lifelike, and scenes that should feel warm instead take on a colder appearance.
That’s only part of the story. Standard Mode also alters gamma to brighten shadows and midtones beyond what content creators intended. While that makes dark scenes easier to see in a brightly lit room, it also strips away some of the depth that makes OLED displays such a compelling buy in the first place. Rather than letting perfect black levels create natural contrast, Samsung opts to reveal more of the image, flattening scenes that should feel moodier or more atmospheric. Samsung’s motion smoothing, sharpening, and AI enhancements are also enabled by default, and while they’re easily disabled, most owners won’t venture into those settings on day one.
Those shortcomings became easy to spot once I started watching actual content. Ghost in the Shell on 4K Ultra HD disc looked spectacular regardless of picture mode, but Standard Mode immediately pushed the film’s iconic neon-soaked cityscapes further than they needed to go. Blues and cyans became noticeably cooler, while bright signage and reflections carried more intensity than I felt the source intended. It still looked undeniably impressive, but there was a subtle artificiality to the image in Standard Mode that became difficult to ignore once I switched over to Filmmaker. Likewise, Oppenheimer’s intimate hearing room scenes exposed the same tendency with skin tones. Faces took on a slightly cooler complexion under Standard Mode, and while the image never looked outright bad, it lacked the natural warmth and nuance Christopher Nolan’s cinematography is known for.
The calibration results reflected what I was seeing. Standard Mode produced an average Delta-E of 21.95 in SDR, indicating colors regularly deviated well beyond their intended values. HDR was even more aggressive, with an average Delta-E climbing to 24.65. In practical terms, the colors on-screen often become different shades entirely.
Thankfully, switching to Filmmaker Mode changes the conversation. Samsung managed to achieve excellent color accuracy without sacrificing brightness. In fact, Filmmaker Mode measured slightly brighter in SDR during testing, reaching 428.6 nits while simultaneously bringing the white point back to a much healthier 6,200K to 6,900K range. That gives the image a far more natural appearance. Skin tones regain warmth, whites stop looking artificially cool, and the picture no longer feels like it’s trying to impress you at every opportunity. Instead, it simply lets the OLED panel and director’s intent speak for themselves.
Filmmaker Mode isn’t entirely flawless, however. Samsung still trends ever so slightly cooler than the D65 reference, though it’s minor enough that most viewers are unlikely to notice. More apparent is the tradeoff introduced by the TV’s excellent anti-glare coating. It does an excellent job of diffusing reflections and makes daytime viewing far more comfortable than many glossy OLEDs, but it also introduces a subtle softness to the image. Side-by-side with a glossy panel, the S90H doesn’t quite have the same razor-sharp appearance, though it’s a compromise I was more than willing to make given how great the TV looks even in my bright living room.
That restraint became especially apparent during Ghost in the Shell’s opening flyover of New Port City. Against the OLED’s perfectly black night sky, neon advertisements remained vibrant without bleeding into one another, while subtle gradients in the darkness stayed intact instead of being overwhelmed by exaggerated highlights. Even the film’s darker sequences, like Major’s thermoptic camouflage and the museum confrontation with the Puppet Master, retained remarkable shadow detail without sacrificing the depth OLED displays are famous for. Oppenheimer proved equally revealing in a completely different way. The film’s close-up dialogue scenes highlighted just how much more lifelike skin tones became in Filmmaker Mode, while the black-and-white sequences maintained clean grayscale transitions with excellent contrast and no obvious clipping in brighter portions of the frame.
HDR follows a similar pattern. Standard Mode unlocks more of the panel’s raw color volume, measuring 93% DCI-P3 coverage compared to Filmmaker Mode’s measured 75%. On paper, that sounds like an easy win for Samsung’s default preset, but color volume only matters if those colors are being reproduced accurately. Project Hail Mary on Prime Video illustrated that difference particularly well in its vibrant reds and greens against the ink-black backdrop of space. Brilliant stars, spacecraft lighting, and reflective metallic surfaces all carried plenty of impact in both modes, but Filmmaker Mode rendered them with noticeably more restraint, avoiding the exaggerated, almost showroom-like appearance Standard Mode occasionally introduced. The result was a more convincing image, although the limitations of a compressed streaming source were still apparent in some darker gradients. The S90H does an admirable job minimizing those shortcomings, but it can’t invent detail that simply isn’t there.
Perhaps the biggest surprise, though, was the S90H’s upscaling. Watching Ridley Scott’s Black Rain on DVD could have easily exposed the weaknesses of a modern 4K display, yet Samsung’s processor handled the aging source with confidence. Compression artifacts weren’t scrubbed away with heavy-handed noise reduction, film grain remained largely intact, and Osaka’s rain-soaked streets retained far more texture than I expected from a standard-definition disc. There were still moments where compression noise and ringing peeked through – as they inevitably will with an older DVD – but Samsung wisely avoids overcorrecting. It’s the kind of performance that makes revisiting an older movie collection far more enjoyable on a 55-inch 4K OLED.
Just as importantly, gamma tracking closely followed the BT.1886 reference curve, preserving shadow detail without artificially brightening it. OLED panels don’t need help producing convincing contrast, and Filmmaker Mode wisely steps back and lets the hardware’s perfect blacks create the depth naturally. Motion handling is equally impressive once Samsung’s default smoothing is dialed back. Films retain their intended cinematic cadence without introducing distracting soap opera effects, though extremely slow camera pans can still exhibit the faint stutter that’s characteristic of OLED’s near-instantaneous response times.
Filmmaker Mode proved that point clearly. HDR color accuracy improved dramatically, with average Delta-E dropping from 24.65 to just 3.75 while the display tracked the HDR ST.2084 EOTF far more closely. The result is an image that looks less exaggerated but significantly more believable, with smoother gradients, more convincing highlights, and colors that appear faithful to the source rather than enhanced for effect.
It’s also worth noting that HDR brightness measurements through SpyderPro should be viewed in context. Consumer OLEDs employ automatic brightness limiting, and HDR testing through Windows introduces additional variables that consumer calibration software isn’t specifically designed to overcome. While those limitations can affect absolute HDR brightness readings, they don’t change the broader takeaway from the testing: Samsung’s processing has a much larger impact on picture quality than the panel itself.
That’s ultimately what defines the S90H OLED TV. Samsung has once again built an OLED that hides its best qualities behind the wrong default settings. Spend thirty seconds switching into Filmmaker Mode and cutting out some of the AI-assisted features, and you’re rewarded with one of the most balanced OLED images in its class, delivering rich HDR, excellent SDR performance, and some of the best out-of-the-box accuracy I’ve measured from Samsung.
Samsung S90H – Gaming
Samsung has spent years building some of the best gaming TVs on the market, and the S90H OLED TV continues that tradition. Equipped with four HDMI 2.1 inputs that feature Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), and a maximum refresh rate of 165Hz – a beefier number first introduced on last year’s flagship Samsung S95F – the S90H feels purpose-built for gamers who want to squeeze every ounce of performance from their hardware. That said, Samsung still hasn’t copied the USB-C video output found on the Hisense U8 Mini-LED TV, a feature I’d love to see on more displays. Plus, there’s still no HDMI 2.2 input, but hopefully TVs will start to pick that up by 2027.
On PlayStation 5 Pro, everything I threw at the S90H looked superb. Grand Theft Auto V showcased deep contrast during nighttime drives through Los Santos, while HDR highlights from headlights, streetlights, and sunsets popped against the OLED’s perfect black levels without looking overprocessed. Fallout 4 benefited from the panel’s strong shadow detail, preserving environmental textures inside dimly lit vaults and abandoned buildings, while EA Sports FC 26 delivered smooth camera pans and crisp player animations throughout fast-paced matches. Motion remained clean across the board, and I never noticed distracting ghosting or blur during extended play sessions.
PC gaming proved equally impressive, thanks largely to the fact that the S90H is equipped with both AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync compatibility. Running Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced and Pragmata in 4K highlighted just how striking Samsung’s OLED panel can be when paired with modern HDR effects, but it was Armored Core VI that really demonstrated the benefit of the S90H’s 165Hz refresh rate. Fast-paced mech combat remained exceptionally responsive, with fluid camera movement and razor-sharp motion that made high frames feel genuinely worthwhile. Whether navigating menus or diving into chaotic battles, the TV always felt quick to respond.
Even the Nintendo Switch 2 looked fantastic in 4K despite its more modest hardware. Pokémon Legends: Z-A benefited from the OLED panel’s rich colors, while Mario Kart World looked vibrant without becoming oversaturated. It’s a reminder that the S90H can elevate practically every platform you connect to it, even without the quantum dot filter on its more expensive flagship model.
If gaming is your primary focus, I’d have no hesitation recommending the S90H over many of its OLED rivals. Samsung’s continued omission of Dolby Vision might sound like a disadvantage on paper, but it’s largely irrelevant for PlayStation 5 Pro and Switch 2 owners, as those consoles don’t support Dolby Vision gaming anyway. That means you’re getting outstanding HDR performance, a higher refresh rate than many competing OLEDs, excellent gaming features, and one of the most responsive gaming experiences available today without giving up much.
Performance Testing
Should you buy it?
It’s funny how a TV’s quality is often best judged by people who don’t spend their days reviewing them. My daily driver is still a projector, but after a few weeks with the S90H OLED, one of my friends stopped mid-conversation to ask what TV I was using because it “looked incredible.” That’s the power of Samsung’s OLEDs. They don’t just disappear into the background, but have a way of making people notice them, even when the screen’s turned off.
If you’re shopping for a premium OLED TV and gaming is anywhere near the top of your priority list, the Samsung S90H is an easy recommendation. Its excellent panel, outstanding gaming feature set, and dramatically improved image accuracy in Filmmaker Mode make it one of the most well-rounded TVs Samsung has produced. It isn’t a set that demands hours of tweaking or professional calibration to look its finest, simply switching away from the default Eco and Standard picture modes unlocks an image that’s bright, cinematic, and impressively faithful to the source.
The biggest consideration is price. At $1,699 for the 55-inch model, the S90H OLED asks for a considerable investment, and that alone may push some buyers toward older models or competing OLEDs that frequently see aggressive discounts, like the LG C-series. At the time of writing, the LG C6 OLED, the S90H’s closest competitor, sits as low as $1,499 on Amazon. While it’s not quite the same, offering just 120Hz and no matte anti-glare coating, it’s always been the best value option for most buyers.
Even so, after living with the S90H TV for several weeks, I came away feeling that Samsung has made meaningful improvements where they matter most. The brighter panel, 165Hz refresh rate, refined processing, and exceptional gaming performance all add up to a TV that’s easy to recommend, and one that continues the S90 series’ reputation as my go-to OLED for most buyers willing to overlook the lack of Dolby Vision.
