Modders finally got a high-quality third-person camera working in Baldur’s Gate 3 for all you Dragon Age sickos

A CRPG in the vein of Baldur’s Gate without a bird’s-eye view camera sure sounds wrong, but it feels so right. If you’re looking for something a little more Dragon Age and less Divinity for your next replay, Modder Relysia has gone and stuck an over-the-shoulder third-person camera in Baldur’s Gate 3, uploading it to Nexus Mods last week, and it looks a lot better than you may expect.

In the brief showcase teaser, you can see the player wandering around the Undercity Ruins. Animations are a tad jittery, but because BG3’s environments are made to be zoomed in and gawked at and shown off in dialog cutscenes, everything is at a believable scale. I’m not sure this would work in all of the game’s environments to the same extent, but that it works at all is nifty.

You’ve always been able to get the camera up close in BG3, but it’s always angled slightly downward, feeling less like a proper third person action game cam, and more like a compromise with its classico tactico overhead view. Even playing with a game pad, it’s distinct from other videogame cameras.

The Nexus Mods page states that it’s compatible with the WASD character movement mod, which we dubbed one of the best mods for Baldur’s Gate 3, so if you wanted you could conceivably replay the game pretending you and your invisible cameraman have been isekai’d out of Dragon Age and into Faerûn. (Throw in the real time with pause mod as well if you’re a true sick freak who rejects the turn-based revolution, comfortable in the knowledge that you’d rather die in four seconds than win if it takes four minutes.)

There are lots of settings, too. You can adjust FOV, offset, camera height, and even customize “horizontal tracking speed” if you’d rather the camera not immediately jerk around with your every impulsive movement. While it’s true a third-person camera option was already achievable via Native Camera Tweaks or the WASD mod, having one that’s so precisely customizable is a win for anyone who wants to appreciate that character they spent four hours customizing up close.
