After revealing the new League of Legends champion Locke, Riot Games has unveiled his abilities and gameplay details. Corvin Locke will arrive in Patch 26.13 as a new AP melee assassin for the mid lane.

Known as the Ashen Exorcist, he is a nail-slinging vigilante born from Demacia’s hidden occult underbelly. He is the only new champion set to release this year as Riot continues to focus on developing League Next and its long-awaited MMO behind the scenes.

Locke’s kit centers on marking souls, stacking power, and executing enemies with precision. Before he arrives on global servers on June 24th, Esports Insider takes a closer look at his abilities and how he could shake up the competitive meta.

A Kit Built Around Setup and Execution

Locke’s story fits perfectly within Demacia, a kingdom that despises magic while hiding dark secrets of its own. Born to occultists, he learned that the real monsters are often people rather than demons.

His voice lines showcase a tough and honest personality. He is not afraid to hold humans accountable as he hunts evil and forces the world to confront uncomfortable truths. Moreover, his story also connects with fellow demon hunter Vayne through recent cinematics.

Coming to Locke’s abilities, he is a melee fighter with a short attack range, and his playstyle revolves around setup and timing, building power before striking hard.

  • Silver Stake (Passive): Locke’s basic attacks deal bonus magic damage. The lower the enemy’s health, the more damage they take, helping him finish off weakened targets.
  • Ritual Nails (Q): Locke throws silver nails in a skillshot, with each nail dealing damage, slowing enemies, and applying a stack. Players can throw up to three nails in quick succession. Moreover, using basic attacks or his E on stacked enemies triggers a powerful burst of bonus damage.
  • Soul Ignition (W): This ability fits Riot’s goal of giving Locke a risky “dark power” fantasy. He sacrifices a portion of his health to gain movement speed and attack speed while storing some of the lost health as gray health that can later be restored.
  • Ashen Pursuit (E): A short blink that deals area damage and empowers Locke’s next basic attack with increased range and bonus damage. Securing a kill resets the cooldown, allowing him to chase enemies and chain fights together, providing the mobility expected from an assassin.
  • Purgatory (R): Locke throws an artifact that marks nearby enemies, heavily slows them, and deals damage. Marked enemies can be executed when they reach very low health. Successful executions grant permanent power stacks and reduce the cooldown of his ultimate.

The Design Philosophy Behind Locke

As shared by Riot Games during an exclusive roundtable, the developer wanted to create a fun and fair AP melee assassin for the mid lane.

As a result, the team focused heavily on providing clear counterplay so he does not feel frustrating to face, especially against champions with reliable crowd control and mobility tools.

“One of the design goals was to see if we can make an assassin feel like they have to kind of set up their burst damage to go through a few steps. So, we are hoping that’ll make him a little bit more fair to play higher counterplay in Modern League,” Riot Games stated.

Locke showcases Riot’s plan to release fewer champions while increasing their overall quality, something that is evident in both his lore and visual design.

When it comes to gameplay, Riot hopes he will feel rewarding for skilled players in both casual and professional play without becoming oppressive in solo queue.

How Locke Could Reshape the Esports Meta

Locke could shake up the mid lane immediately, as he matches up well into slower mages and can roam effectively thanks to the reset mechanic on his E. His execute-focused ultimate also makes him a strong threat in skirmishes, teamfights, and dives against squishy targets.

Players may begin prioritizing champions with mobility, crowd control, or shielding to counter his burst-oriented playstyle.

Teams with champions such as Leona and Neeko should pair well with Locke. He could push some older assassins out of the meta or encourage players to invest more heavily in magic resistance. Increased roaming pressure from the mid lane could also impact how junglers and bot laners approach the early game.

Over time, Locke may help revive interest in AP assassin and bruiser playstyles that can punish traditional control mages such as Azir, who are often vulnerable during the early stages of the game.

The majority of the community has praised the depth of Locke’s kit as well and how fair he feels compared to older assassins. His satisfying nail combos and chase potential have drawn comparisons to champions such as Diana, Kha’Zix, and Ekko.

“There is no spell out of place here, it fits perfectly with how the champ wants to play. The kit is a hard one to balance,” said Tim “Nemesis” Lipovšek.

“Might be one of the most fair assassins in a while if ever, his kit has a lot of counter play,” Noah “Yozu” Carter stated.

That said, some players are concerned that Locke could become too strong in coordinated team play, particularly because of his ultimate and its theoretically unlimited scaling through permanent power stacks.

While it remains to be seen how Locke will perform once players get their hands on him, Riot appears to have delivered a champion that blends high-skill execution with meaningful counterplay.
