‘We Moved Away From That Baby Face’ — Overwatch Reveals Updated Look For Anran Following Fan Backlash

Overwatch has unveiled an updated look for one of its newest heroes, Anran, following criticism of how her face previously looked in-game.

The redesign has happened following an initial backlash from the community and the voice actor who portrays the fire fan-wielding damage dealer, Fareeha, who claimed that “this was a hill worth dying on” after it was suggested that Anran was yet another victim of Overwatch’s “Same Face Syndrome”.

This syndrome is the suggestion that many of the female heroes in Overwatch suffer from the fact that they all have basically the exact same facial features, whether that be the Swedish Brigitte, British Tracer, Japanese Kiriko, Martian Juno, or, up until now, Chinese Anran.

Back in February, Blizzard revealed that plans were underway for a rethink when it came to Anran’s appearance, stating that “we agree that she can be even better”. Well, now we’ve finally got a look at the result of those tweaks.

In a video posted on Overwatch’s social media, game director Aaron Keller says, “I wanted to take a moment to share the updated version of Anran’s in-game look. We want our heroes to feel unique, but we also want their visuals to match their personality, and we feel like we didn’t quite land that when Anran first released.”

“We think she could come across older and that her original version was too innocent and playful”, Keller continued. “Anran is confident, determined, fierce, and a natural-born leader, and we want her visuals in game to convey that personality. So we made some adjustments to her face. We focused on her eyes, eyebrows, and mouth, and we moved away from that baby face, look, and expression to something more sincere and more mature, and even something like a simple posture change can help Anran feel, well, more like Anran!” We’re really happy with the way these changes turned out, and also that she has a closer resemblance to her brother Wuyang.”

“We have five more heroes coming in this year, and we want all of them to feel true to who they are,” explains Keller. “Going through this process has really helped the team dial in this next set of heroes. So please, keep sharing your thoughts.”

In a reply to the official game’s account, Keller added, “We’re really happy with the way Anran’s personality is coming through with these changes. And personally, I’m encouraged by what the team can accomplish when players advocate for our game!”

In turn, Anran’s performer, Fareeha, quoted the above video and posted, “So grateful for this update, she looks much more like the strong older sibling we knew her to be! Thank you team 4 and thank you overwatch community!!!”

She then went on to reply to the post, saying “Thank you so much for making this change, her new look is so STRIKING and you all did so well especially within the tech limitations at hand. I’m so happy and grateful this happened.”

Season 2 on the newly revamped Overwatch begins on April 14, with a new hero set to join the game, who will be fully revealed on Wednesday, April 8. For all of the details on them, make sure to come back to IGN.

Overwatch has seen somewhat of a resurgence recently, following the announcement that the game was dropping its “2” and adding 10 new heroes in future. This year will see Overwatch enter a “new, story-driven era” with a year-long narrative and a major overhaul — which began with the launch of Season 1 on February 10.
