Valve changes how weapon reloads work in CS2 update

Valve’s latest CS2 update overhauls the weapon reload system entirely. Instead of a traditional reserve ammo pool that tracks individual bullets, each weapon now carries a fixed number of magazines. Reloading discards the entire current mag, including any unspent rounds, meaning even a single shot fired forces you to throw away the rest of that magazine if you reload.

“We think the decision to reload should have higher stakes”

In their update blog titled “Guns, Guides, and Games” the devs explained their reasoning behind the change. According to Valve, the current reload system with an “essentially endless reserve supply” never offered “significant trade-offs”, allowing players to freely reload provided they were stood in a safe position. Instead the devs want the decision to reload to have higher stakes, thus necessitating the rework.
