After finishing runner-up at the 2023 LoL World Championship, top laner TheShy confirmed he will take a hiatus from the competitive scene.

TheShy parted ways with WBG after two years

The Korean top laner was a key member in WBG’s rise at Worlds 2023, which brought the LPL #4 seed all the way to the finals. Unfortunately, TheShy and his teammates were dominated by T1 in the finals. The loss put an end to the player’s hopes of winning a second world title, who has been chasing glory ever since he won the first championship with Invictus Gaming.

In a message to his fans on Weibo, TheShy said:

“In the two years of 2022 and 2023, I was very happy to spend time with WBG, and I am truly grateful to WBG. I initially wanted to achieve better results with my teammates in this World Championship, but the results were not that ideal. I feel like I did not perform well enough and I feel sorry. So I want to take a break and use it to adjust my physical and mental state. If there is a chance, I will try my best to see everyone again with a new look in the summer split. I sincerely thank all Weibo staff, teammates, and coaches. I am also very grateful to my fans who have always supported me. Lastly, I wish everyone can live healthily and meaningfully every single day.”

Now that TheShy is no longer on the roster, WBG will have to find a new top laner for the upcoming 2024 season. And given that Weiwei is rumored to join LNG for the next season, this means that two players from the 2023 roster will leave the team. While WBG’s new jungler is rumored to be Xiaohao, according to Chinese agent Han Yi (涵艺), it’s unclear who will fill the vacant spot left by TheShy.
