Mongolia – the new king of PUBG Mobile Esports after PMGC 2023 victory

Before the PMGC 2022, there were two regions considered the best for PUBG Mobile esports. These were China and Southeast Asia. But, after the PMGC 2023, that title can now be safely given to Mongolia.

China has always been a force to be reckoned with in PUBG Mobile Esports. This isn’t a very surprising thing. The Chinese PUBG Mobile scene, where the game is called Peacekeeper Elite, features huge franchised leagues with millions in prize pool. Unsurprisingly, this has led to the region producing better talents.

Chinese teams were the top two in the first-ever edition of the PMGC 2020. In 2021, Nova Esports from China were able to successfully defend their title. What was even more remarkable is that these performances weren’t close contests. Chinese teams were comfortably ahead throughout the tournament.

While this was great news for the local Chinese scene, it wasn’t for the game. For the growth of PUBG Mobile esports, there needs to be a more even distribution of talent, local stars, and better competition. Fast-forward to two years, and this has become the case.

Before the PMGC 2022, no one considered S2G Esports, who weren’t very acclaimed globally as a contender for the title. However, the Turkish team put up a dominant performance to take the trophy home to the Middle Eastern region for the first time. The three Chinese teams placed eighth, ninth, and 11th, respectively.

After their domination throughout the past two years, this result in the PMGC 2022 Grand Finals was a big surprise. Especially after the teams performed well in the Group Stages. Many considered that maybe they had a few bad days in the Grand Finals. However, the PMGC 2023 has proved that isn’t the case and that other regions have caught up with China.

Mongolia isn’t a popular region in any esport title. With a mere 3 million population per a 2020 estimate, the country is one of the least populated ones around the world. However, in the top charts of the PMGC 2023, this isn’t the case as Stalwart Esports, IHC Esports, and 4Merical Vibes took first, second, and fourth place in the tournament, respectively.

Mongolia has been on an upward trajectory in PUBG Mobile Esports since the 2022 PMGC, where Stalwart and IHC placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the PMGC 2023, Stalwart was fighting for the title from the first day itself. They got two chicken dinners on Day 1, cementing themselves in the top spot with an eight-point lead. IHC, however, didn’t have a good outing as they finished in sixth place.

IHC began its comeback on Day two with a consistent performance. Finally, on the third day, they earned one Chicken Dinner which cemented their hands on the trophy.

Out of the 18 matches in the PMGC 2023 Finals, six of them were earned by the three Mongolian teams. The country will now be a part of the newly-established PMSL Central and South Asia which will take place as an offline event. As the 2024 PMGC heads to the United Kingdom, it remains to be seen how the country fares to the increasing competition from different regions in the game.
