Worlds 2023 Swiss Stage – G2 vs DK – October 19, 11:00 CET

With the introduction of the newest Worlds Swiss format, the top 16 teams will have to chance to play against teams from the same regions and different seedings. All that matters is the scoring record at the end of each round, as it will determine their potential next opponents.

The first round of the Swiss stage, however, was determined through a draw, and the #1 seed from the LEC G2 Esports probably got the worst matchup among the Pool 4 teams, LCK’s DK. On paper, DK is the best team from the #4 seeds, and according to an interview with Ruler, the Korean team is performing well in scrims.

This match will be an important test for both teams, as they will essentially be each other’s benchmarks. For G2, it will likely determine their overall chances of qualifying in the top 8 at Worlds; for DK, instead, it will be a good test to see whether they are better than what they achieved this season so far.

The meta will play a major role

On paper, the two teams have distinctive strengths and weaknesses. On G2’s side, we have the bot lane of Hans Sama and Mikyx that can potentially go against the bot eastern bot lanes, and BrokenBlade has stepped up immensely towards the end of the LEC championship. Not to mention that Yike and Caps can swing the momentum if they are playing well on the day.

On the other hand, however, DK has the incredible duo of Canyon and Showmaker. In particular, I feel like these two players have indirectly benefitted from the meta shift, with the return of proactive junglers like Lee Sin and Jarvan IV. Canyon is famous for playing 2v2s with his own mid laner, and that was one of the reasons why the team was so successful in the past few years.

Deft and Kellin are a solid bot lane and the meta seems too good for a player like Deft who can be self-independent on picks like Xayah and Ezreal. Canna is probably the weakest link on DK’s side, and he will be a question mark going into the series.

Overall, the chances are pretty even on both sides, even though DK might be a bit favored considering the carry potential from their mid-jungle duo. That said, G2 has a lot going on for them as well: if BrokenBlade is able to dominate the top lane on his own and Hans Sama gets good matchups, then the LEC first seed definitely has a saying. Let’s not forget that it will be a Bo1 series: the draft will be crucial and whoever has the better meta-read will likely come out on top.

Prediction: G2 0 – 1 DK
