It has been claimed by a prominent Apex Legends insider that there’s a brand new feature coming to the game in the near future. It’s a perk system that’s based on what existed in the mobile game that was shut down on May 1st, 2023. With this brand-new system, Legends will take on a progression path that allows users to customise their characters and the abilities that they have in-game. By doing this, it diversifies the battlefield and makes each fight more unique.
These ‘progression paths’ are made up of a mix of simple, basic upgrades and more impactful amendments to any given Legend. They’re unique paths, too – they’re tailored for each Legend, just as they were in the mobile variant of the game. On Twitter, this insider posted a message stating that there’s ‘no idea on release date’ but it’s definitely being worked on, and it’ll change the face of the game once it’s introduced.
Apex Legends is Here For Good
Apex Legends is going to be around for a very long time. In March, it was revealed that Respawn’s developers have goals to push Apex Legends to a twenty-year lifecycle, and that’s why they’re continuously innovating and improving the game. For a while, Apex was considered the top battle royale game in the world, but owing to some declining numbers in recent months, that might not be the case anymore.
Regardless, the Apex esports scene remains remarkably strong, and it was just days ago that the Apex Legends Global Series was wrapped up in Birmingham, England.
Here’s the post from Apex Legends leaker, Thordan Smash:
The image he’s shared is from the mobile version of the game that was canned earlier this year. However, the path works in a similar fashion to the upgrade paths seen in other EA games, namely in 2018’s Battlefield V. In this game, weapons could be upgraded along pathways but only certain paths could be followed, forcing the player to pick one upgrade or another – and that’s how things would work here, too.
Would Custom Perks Really Change Apex Legends?
Firstly, it’s important to stress that we don’t know to what extent the new perk system will ‘copy’ the one seen in the mobile game. It could use the foundational format, but the perks could be wildly different, or how you unlock them might be a complete change from what existed.
There are high expectations that changes like this will be impactful enough to bring players back to the game in their droves. There’s something special about being given the opportunity to customise your character, and if it’s anything like the perk system in Apex Legends Mobile, it’ll encourage substantial changes. These perks could impact tactical abilities, passives, finishers, and buffs or extra boosts.
With the option of being much more creative, this change would definitely benefit the ecosystem, but would it be made available in Apex Legends esports circles?
