The Digimon TCG is blessed with a wide range of artists and art styles. From the very first set, to sets yet to come out, veterans and even fans alike have been drafted to provide the TCG with fantastic Digimon card art. Making it popular with collectors and players alike. We’ve compiled a list of our top 3 Digimon card art, and the artists that worked on the piece as of BT13.
1) Omnimon Alter-S EX04 – Naochika Morishita
Our pick for the best Digimon card art, the featured Digimon for EX04’s box art, Omnimon Alter-S. Its Alternate Artwork (AA) had experienced Omnimon artist Naochika Morishita reprise his role. In addition to being a detailed and dynamic render of a fan favourite Digimon, the EX04 Omnimon all have call-backs to each artist’s previous Omnimon work.
Morishita has worked on the Digimon TCG since the start, providing artwork for the game’s first Secret rare. BT5-087 Omnimon Zwart is the Omnimon referenced in Alter-S’ AA. The card received a Chase Card variant with a silver background, which while rarer lacks the contrast that helps Alter-S truly stand out.
2) Sasasi’s X Antibody Digimon card art features evolution references
Sasasi is a fan favorite for the Digimon TCG. With a colossal resume across the game’s history, featuring both regular and alternate arts across plenty of sets. Its quite likely that some of your favorite cards are from them. Or likely that at least 1 card in your deck was drawn by them.
The Digimon TCG frequently likes to make references to other Digimon media in its card art. While the V-Pet references might not be as widely understood. Many references to the anime or games’ canon evolution lines are always welcome. Sasasi’s X Antibody Rookies BT9-056 Dorumon and BT9-060 Ryudamon are the main starters for BT9’s feature deck, Alphamon. Dorumon features Alphamon, Dorugoragamon and DexDorugoramon and the X Antibody itself in its artwork. And Ryudamon features the living sword dragon – Ouryumon in its background.
3) Tonamikanji’s Sakuyamon
Sakuyamon is a Digimon Tamers favorite. Sakuyamon players looking for AAs often have to pay the waifu tax. At the time of writing, Tonamikanji is responsible for all but 1 Sakuyamon Alt. With Teppei Tadokoro doing BT5-044 Sakuyamon‘s AA, while Tonamikanji provided the regular Digimon card art. Their ability to render dynamic energy is a standout mark of their style, best encapsulated in ShineGreymon: Burst & Ruin Mode AAs.
4) As’Maria
With a penchant for blur mixed in with detailed rendering, As’Maria’s iconic artstyle has been used for plenty an AA, and fantastic for cards that didn’t get one. Even pieces without their signature blur, like EX2-024 Sakuyamon‘s regular art (Editor’s Pick) having fantastic fluidity. And BT10-112 JesmonGX and BT10-012 Jesmon (X Antibody) AAs feature a pseudo stained glass approach, fitting for the church based Digimon deck. If you were to ask a player their favourite artwork, it wouldn’t be strange for one of their answers to contain an As’Maria card.
