Nintendo has announced Super Mario Bros. Wonder, a brand new 2D Mario platformer coming this October.
Revealed during today’s Nintendo Direct, the game is coming out on October 20. Wonder features a new Elephant power-up, local multiplayer, talking flowers, and playable Daisy.
The central mechanic this time around appears to be the new Wonder Flowers, where touching one can completely change the way the world looks and plays. The ground can start moving, a herd of sheep may appear, Mario can stretch into an extremely tall version of himself, or you might transform into something different.
The game’s art style is a departure from the New Super Mario Bros. visuals that’s been consistent across the 2D Mario games for the last 18 years. Backgrounds appear more detailed, and the characters themselves have been slightly redesigned as well.
Other gameplay shown included Mario grinding on rails, swimming up waterfalls, avoiding rollerskating Koopas, and more. In addition to Mario and Daisy, Peach, Luigi, and Toad were also shown to be playable. Mario was also seen riding on Yoshi.
Nintendo is calling this the first brand new sidescrolling Mario game in over ten years. The last two traditional 2D Mario games were New Super Mario Bros. 2 on 3DS and New Super Mario Bros. U on Wii U. In the time since, we’ve seen two Mario Makers, Super Mario Run, and a Deluxe port of Mario U.
