Assassin's Creed: Nexus Is a 'True, Proper, Full Assassin's Creed Game'

Assassin’s Creed is headed into VR, with a new look at Assassin’s Creed Nexus today showing the first-ever first-person VR parkour and assassination for the franchise. But while some AAA franchises dip their toes into VR with spin-offs, demo experiences, or other smaller-scale projects, Ubisoft is reassuring players that Assassin’s Creed: Nexus is a full-fledged Assassin’s Creed game.

We sat down with creative director David Votypka to talk about Assassin’s Creed: Nexus, which we learned today has an unusual story structure. It’s split between three protagonists we’ve met in previous games: Ezio, Kassandra, and Connor, and ties their stories together through a player-insert protagonist looking for a hidden artifact that each may have encountered.

While this may not be a typical structure for an Assassin’s Creed game, Votypka wants players to know that Nexus will be a truly meaty experience.

“We didn’t set out to make a small, little VR experience with a little bit of Assassin’s Creed sprinkled on top,” Votypka says. “This is a true, proper, full Assassin’s Creed AAA game. It’s got a full campaign, full narrative, everything that you would expect. So it’s important for players to know that we went all-in on it, and we’re excited for them to discover everything that we have to offer.”

Assassin’s Creed: Nexus was quietly confirmed back in 2021 before being given its actual title earlier this month. It’s coming exclusively to Meta Quest 2 sometime this year.

Nexus wasn’t the only Assassin’s Creed game we got a look at today. We also learned more about the stealth gameplay of Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, and got a longer look at Assassin’s Creed: Codename Jade.
