Biggest Wins at Combo Breaker 2023

Combo Breaker 2023 took place over the weekend. This is one of the biggest events on the fighting game esports calendar. We got tournaments for all of the major games, including one of the last tournaments for SF V.

The weekend had a few fun moments across games, a new title even got its debut event with Rushdown Revolt! There were tons of games featured, but there are a few with some highlights worth going over here. These are the main takeaways from Combo Breaker 2023 if you missed part of the tournament.

Combo Breaker 2023 – Key Moments

Smash Bros

Combo Breaker 2023 saw both Melee and Ultimate get tournaments, hot the heels of Battle of BC 5. The Ultimate events didn’t have all of the major players attending so we got to see some more outside talent fight it out. A few of the placing names are making their biggest wins at a Major so far, always exciting stuff. Dabuz took 1st place at the event proper though. The Team Liquid player has had some great placements other the years, including second at Smash Factor 9 to MKLeo and 4th at a recent Kagaribi, losing to Sparg0. Getting a major win for recent events under their belt is definitely going to be a bump though.

Over in Melee, Magi took first place. She is one of the first female players to really hit this level of the game. This win comes pretty soon after she left her team with CLG buyout meaning they left Smash. It’s yet another demonstration that letting a pretty successful roster go was a weird move. This Major win for Magi comes on the back of quite a successful run for the player, including high placements at Low Tide City and Major Upset. With Combo Breaker 2023 as a win, this could be the start of a real run for them.

Guilty Gear Strive

Guilty Gear Strive was a fun tournament with one of the bigger prize pools at $10,630. It was won in the end by TempestNYC. He’s been a dominant force in Guilty Gear for 2023, winning Frosty Faultings on top of taking great placements at the ARC World Tour 2022 Finals, Crossover Arc, and Slashback. This could be the start of a run that might take him far in the next Arc World Tour.

Other Games at Combo Breaker 2023

Those are some of the biggest moments from Combo Breaker 2023. There were loads of tournaments at the event though, as one of the biggest fighting game events before EVO in the next few months. Too many to cover everything in depth here, but replays are available if you want to see how the tournament went for games like Skullgirls, Melty Blood, and Street Fighter II Turbo.
