The Battle of BC 5 finals took place over the weekend, with separate tournaments for Melee and Ultimate. Across the board, these were some of the biggest events we’ve seen in Smash for quite a while. In both titles, we saw some surprise wins. Major players faded into lower rankings on the results, with two big names returning to the champion’s seat at the bracket.

In the Ultimate side of things, there were some big surprises at the tournament. A lot of this year’s Smash has been dominated by new players rising to the top of the best Smash players, like acola the Japanese Steve main who has been taking Major after Major. At Battle of BC Finals, that trend was broken though by Sparg0.
The Ultimate bracket was full of surprises for the best Smash Bros players. From the opening round, we saw MKLeo fighting it out in the lower loser’s bracket. He was knocked out by Kameme in the round of the loser’s bracket. A very early finish for someone who used to have half the majors tied up.
Further into the Smash Battle of BC 5 Finals Ultimate Bracket, acola opened things in the quarter finals against Sisqui, where he had a solid sweep through to face Miya in the Semis. That was a longer fight, but one that acola managed to pull back after going down 2-1 at the halfway point. Sparg0 had a similar run through, with a clean win in the semis before a bit more trouble in the quarters against Maister.
The final match for the two proved a bit unconventional though. Sparg0 won the first three rounds for a simple win. Acola decided to mix things up to deal with Sparg0’s Cloud, going for Donkey Kong originally and eventually switching to Prya. He’s best known as a Steve player, but did put in a good performance with his secondaries. In the end Sparg0 took the win. He’s been back on top lately winning tournaments like Major Upset and a Kagaribi. The Battle of BC Finals win cements him at the top of Ultimate for 2023.

The Ultimate side of things were entertaining, but Melee had plenty of surprises too. Cody Schwab won the tournament. He’s on a run of big wins now, crazy results for an unsigned player. Once again, Cody Schwab is proving how bizarre his continued status as a free agent is.
Just in Ultimate, recent tournaments for Melee have shown a shifting of powers. Ever since aSMa took his first Yoshi major win, he’s been on fire. Cody Schwab has equally been on the ascension, with both winning out against last year’s no.1 Zain.
At the Battle of BC 5, Cody Schwab got knocked down to the loser’s bracket in the third round of Winners, after facing Jmook. Heading into the Battle of BC 5 final bracket, he had a rematch against Jmook. This time he had a clean win. That put him up to face Zain in the Losers Final. It was a tenser match. Cody Schwab managed to take an advantage and get the win.
The final for Melee was aMSa against Cody Schwab. As he came in from losers, Cody Schwab had to force a bracket reset. He took the first two rounds, then dropped one. After that, he won every single round to completely dominated the finals. At this point, Org’s with a Smash roster must have some weird priorities to leave such a strong player unsigned for this long.
That’s how things went down at the Battle of BC 5 Finals. This was a huge competition and it opened things up for the year too. We had surprising brackets for both sides of Smash here, with some unconventional results for the top players.
