2B Smash Bros Ultimate – Why didn’t she make the roster?
2B Smash Bros Ultimate – Why didn’t she make the roster?

Smash Bros’ roster is diverse enough to have Sephiroth, Banjo-Kazooie, and an old toy that came free with American copies of the NES. It can’t please everyone though.

2B is definitely a character a lot of fans would have liked to see included. Even the director of the NeiR series of games has talked about his creation ending up in the biggest Switch fighting game.

Is 2B in Smash Bros?

Ultimate has a very large cast. Basically everyone is in the Smash Bros roster, a total number that’s unlikely to be achieved again. However, there are a few absences and 2B in Smash Bros just didn’t work out this time around.

The character hasn’t made it into the game as a fighter, spirit, or assist. Unlike some other fan favorites requests like Rayman in Smash, there isn’t even a consolation prize of getting into World of Light. A lot of this might come down to when the game was published and its general level of popularity though. Fans might be disappointed about 2B in Smash Bros not making the cut, but it seems those feelings are shared by the character’s creators too.

NieR Automata Director on 2B in Smash Bros

NieR Automata has been a massive hit since its 2017 release. It’s central character 2B is now pretty recognisable, and even stars in an anime adaptation of the title. The game came to Switch a little while later than other platforms though. That spurred the game’s director to talk about 2B in Smash Bros.

While talking to NintendoLife, Yako Taro discussed the Smash Bros topic. Saying “I am hugely disappointed that we did not make it in time to get into Smash Bros”.

The quote as specifically about releasing on Switch, implying that a title has to have representation on the Nintendo platform to make it into their fighter. Although, the Smash Bros roster doesn’t quite reflect that. Joker from Persona 5 made it in long before that title came to switch. Although, that inclusion has been explained specifically. Joker was a personal choice of series director Sakurai. The other DLC character were apparently Nintendo’s choices.

A lack of a Switch game doesn’t seem too big of a barrier. Snake is hardly a Nintendo mainstay, and Sora in Smash happened before Kingdom Hearts’ mainline RPG came to Switch. Even with such a huge cast of characters, it seems we can’t get everyone in Smash Bros. 2B’s more adult design might be more of a problem than the game making it to Switch late. We already know other characters aren’t possible because of this.

Fan mods for 2B you can install today

2B in Smash Bros Ultimate might not happen officially, but it doesn’t mean fans have given up. Like with much-requested additions such as Crash in Smash, there’s a fan-made mod that puts 2B into the game!

These are nice touches from the fan base that help anyone see how their favorite character would play in the platform fighter. Just because 2B in Smash Bros didn’t happen with Ultimate, it doesn’t mean it’s the end either.

The next Smash Bros game probably won’t challenge the roster size of Ultimate. However, 2B is from a company that has plenty of other characters in Smash, so rights issues are unlikely to be a problem. With the character remaining recognisable years after NeiR’s release and the director personally wanting 2B in Smash Bros, it’s possible we’ll get them as a newcomer in a future Smash game!
