Riot Games has announced they will be increasing the MSI 2023 prize pool with the sales coming from the Esports Special Bundle.
MSI 2023 prize pool will get a boost compared to previous years
The Mid-Season Invitational is the first international LoL tournament of the year. This year, the best 13 teams from across the world will be gathering in London, with a total prize pool of $250.000. The eventual MSI champions will take home at least $50.000, 20% of the total amount.
That said, Riot mentioned that they will be finding ways to increase the total prize pool starting this year. This means that $250.000 won’t be the final prize pool in 2023, as the developers are planning to add a percentage of the sales coming from in-game purchases.
According to the official post from Riot Games, 25% of all proceeds from the Inkshadow Event Pass and Inkshadow Yasuo in-game skin will go towards increasing the event prize pool. On top of that, there will also be a special MSI 2023 Esports Premium Bundle (which will include a chroma version of the Yasuo skin and an emote) for fans: 50% of those sales will be also added to the MSI 2023 prize pool.
Riot is trying to help teams generate more revenue streams
While prize pools are known to be a small percentage of a team or organization’s revenue, it’s still a welcome change to help teams in a period where teams have struggled to stay afloat.
Recently, the developers publicly stated that they are looking to explore more ways for teams to make money, with plans of introducing a Virtual Pass for Worlds 2023.
By pushing out these special in-game items, fans can support their favorite teams through these types of contributions, which are also beneficial to the consumer. Riot mentioned that more details will be explained on Apr. 27th.
