Big Winners at the Texas Showdown 2023
Big Winners at the Texas Showdown 2023

Texas Showdown 2023 was one of the biggest fighting game tournaments of the Spring! This American tournament has just wrapped up, with major events for nearly all of the best fighting games. Across all the games, there was a decent number of surprises with what went down at Texas Showdown.

If you want to know about each of the games featured at Texas Showdown and who came out on top over the weekend, this is how it all happened.

Texas Showdown 2023

Texas Showdown 2023 was a whole weekend of competitive esports action. Obviously, it took place in Texas. Players competed competing in offline tournaments for a load of the top fighting games. The event starts ran April 21 and finishes on April 23.

Across these three days, tournaments opened with a wider pools round before they move into a double-elimination bracket. The bigger events here included Tekken as part of the Tekken World Tour

Tekken 7 – Cuddle_core Dominates Event at Tekken Showdown 2023

Tekken 7 is one of the bigger tournaments at Texas Showdown 2023. There was a $2,220 prize pool here and just under 150 players attending. Officially it’s part of the Tekken World Tour 2023 circuit, so players were getting points for the whole year if they can succeed here. Some of the big players attending include Cuddle_core, JoeCrush, and Joonya 20z.

The event ended up being one of the most entertaining of the tournament. Cuddle_core’s run through the winners’ bracket was nearly flawless. He started out against JoeCrush, where he didn’t lose a set. He then repeated the feat against azure in the Winner’s Final. Eventually, he took on joonya 20x in the Grand Final, and once again won without losing a round,

Cuddle_core’s impressive run definitely marks him as a contender to watch at the rest of the year’s Tekken World Tour.

King of Fighters XV

King of Fighters was another highlight on the Texas Showdown 2023 roster with a pretty sizeable $1,000 prize pool. The prize here was provided directly by SNK, which compared to others here pretty clearly shows the impact of developers supporting titles at events like this. Between providing prize pools and a recent KoF demo, it seems SMK is pushing King of Fighters pretty hard right now.

KoF XV at Texas Showdown saw Reynald take the win, after a smooth run through the winners bracket. Combo Fiend gave him a run for his money though. The player fought through the lower bracket, and got all the way back to the Grand Finals. Then, he forced a reset in the final match. While Reynald cemented his win in the second stage, both players put in good performances over the weekend.

Street Fighter V at Texas Showdown

The Street Fighter V tournament at Texas Showdown was a dramatic one, with Justakid nearly making it all the way. The player started in the winner’s side of the semi-finals before getting sent down to the lower bracket by JB. He made his way back through to the finals of that bracket with little resistance though. In a rematch against JB, he turned the tide in the second match and won his slot at the winner’s finals, up against Shine.

The final match was between the two standout players in the tournament. Shine looked like a favorite early, but Justakid dominated early in the final before a full reset. In the second set, Shine reclaimed the advantage and took it 3-0. This was one of the closer matches at Texas Showdown and a closer final. A lot of Street Fighter fans might have been busy with the new SF 6 demo, but this shows there’s still a lot of fun in Street Fighter V.

Other Games at Texas Showdown 2023

Along with each of those headline events, Texas Showdown featured quite a few extra tournaments without the same level of prize, including quite a few for some of the best anime fighting games. These are the other main tournaments for fighting games and side events at the tournament.
