MultiVersus Open Beta is Shutting down

MultiVersus’ fate has been a hot topic for fans in recent months. There have been delays upon delays. All promises about release schedules for new characters have basically gone out of the window. While the MultiVersus patch notes still included some regular events, it was clear something was happening with the game.

Today we’ve heard that the MultiVersus Open Beta is shutting down. The game will be pausing updates as of now, so the current form of the game and the MultiVersus tier list is how it’ll stay. The title will then be taken off of platforms for download. It’ll also go offline, so for the most part it isn’t going to be playable.

When is it Coming back?

The MultiVersus Open Beta might be shutting down, but it isn’t going away forever. The developer posted an update on the official blog explaining why some time away was going to be needed for MultiVersus. The CEO of Player First Games wrote “We know there’s still a lot of work to do. As a result, we have a clearer view of what we need to focus on, specifically the content cadence of new characters, maps and modes to give you more ways to enjoy the game, along with updated net code and more matchmaking improvements.”

The post concludes by confirming the Open Beta will be shutting down on June 25th 2023. However, it will be coming back with even more features like progression reworked. Some of this isn’t too surprising, since Ranked has been on and off lately too. The MultiVersus Open Beta is shutting down, but the game will return in a new form, currently with a planned release date of 2024.

This could mean a long wait for fans to get back into the game and carry on fighting. In the meantime, the training room and local matches will continue to be available. We might still see some content with devoted players labbing in the interim. The title will carry over progression and cosmetics, so if you’ve grabbed one of the rarest MultiVersus skins you don’t have to say goodbye to that just yet.

MultiVersus launched to record numbers. It faulted a little over time though and has suffered quite a bit in recent months. Hopefully, this relaunch will see the game re-emerge ready to deliver on all of that early potential.
