On the 20th of July, the latest piece of Rocket League esports news dropped, with Wisdom Media announcing the return of the much loved Gold Rush, in the form of the Gold Rush: Totally Excellent Weekend. The event will feature countless notable names in the Rocket League community on location in the Mall of America on August 27th and 28th.
While the tournament may not be an RLCS Major or have a notable impact on the Rocket League rankings system, a Gold Rush event is guaranteed to be one of a kind and who better to deliver than Wisdom Media. In the words of Jaycie “Gillyweed” Gluck, Senior Vice President at Wisdom: “Gold Rush stands out in the Rocket League community as an event that brings together some of the scene’s biggest creators and pros with a focus on competitive formats and content that allow players’ personalities to shine.”
Who is going to be there?
Gold Rush is equally known for the best Rocket League players and personalities that feature at the event, and the 80’s Themed Rocket League LAN at Mall of America is no different. Some of the confirmed guests to be competing in the various mini-games are four-time World Champion Pierre ‘Turbopolsa’ Silfver, Spacestation Gaming talisman Tshaka ‘Arsenal’ Taylor, and Dillon ‘Rizzo’ Rizzo. And the talent isn’t lacking either, with Caleb ‘Wavepunk’ Simmons and Demar ‘Dazerin’ Williams already confirmed to be in attendance amongst a host of others.
Where can I watch?
Across the whole of the 80’s Themed Totally Excellent Weekend, the event will be streamed at twitch.tv/rizzo starting at 1pm CST time for each of the two days.
A confirmed part of the weekend will be four different teams competing against one another over six rounds in the Wisdom Arcade in Rocket League. Not to mention two of the team captains for the event will include past Gold Rush attendees, none other than Christopher “Dappur” Mendoza, and Cameron ‘Kronovi’ Bills.
How can I attend?
The event venue in Minnesota is the Wisdom Gaming Studios located on Level 4 of the Mall of America in particular, and will apparently feature limited seating on site that will be available for purchase in person.
However, as this is limited, Wisdom Media have also made sure that Gold Rush: Totally Awesome Weekend can be viewed for free by fans in the area, as the Huntington Bank Rotunda will be featuring an “experimental activation” for funs to be able to get in on the fun. This seating will understandably be allocated on a first-come, first serve basis.
History of Gold Rush events
The history of Gold Rush Events is rich and decorated, with the two previous offline events being held in 2017 and 2018. A long time ago no less, though the memories still ring true and hold strong for many members of the Rocket League community. Given that Rocket League only went Free to Play in September 2020 however, this will be a new experience for many of the fans in the scene.
The first Gold Rush event was also a two-day event on location though in San Fransisco, with the format being a battle of regions between Europe, US East and US West where the professional players in attendance faced off in all the formats of 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3. Each win in that respect would earn a “nugget” for the player/team’s region with ultimately Europe taking the win by a fine margin, with plenty of thanks to Francesco “kuxir97” Cinquemani winning the 1v1 side of things. This was a particularly exciting event because of that aspect, being the first true 1v1 contest between the top players in the world on zero ping.

Keeping the Gold Rush rolling
The event received widespread appreciation for the general relaxed vibe, and the opportunity to see a far more personal side of the players and talent fans looked up to, with the classic couch being home to those with the microphones, and players having plenty of opportunities to try their hand at casting, offer different insight or even talk about some unrelated random topic. Long-term followers will be excited to see if the 80’s Themed Totally Excellent Weekend also maintains that community feel with Wisdom Media delivering.
The second Gold Rush on the other hand while also in California, was an event spread over 4 days. The feel and format were similar though with countless funny moments, this time the teams not simply being regional as they were instead mixed. With #TeamJacob consitsted of Jacob “Jacob” McDowell himself captaining, alongside Canadian Jacob “JKnaps” Knapman and Fin Otto “Metsanauris” Kaipiainen. Despite Dappur being a force and winning in the 1v1 department over JKnaps, he could not turn over the deficit for Team “GarrettGG EZ”. As you can probably tell, the whole event is about not only the fans, but the players and personalities having fun, and it’s that pull that makes Gold Rush events so enjoyable and memorable.
