AI vs expert: Human to bounce back for LEC Week 2 against Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT?

Week two of the LEC Summer Split is here, and so is round two of —drum-roll, please—humans versus robots.

Last week, I handed Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini the opening-weekend LEC fixtures, plus the handicap markets and Over/Unders, and asked each to build a $10 accumulator. Craig Robinson vowed to beat the bots and triumph for humankind. It’s safe to say, it didn’t quite go to plan.

In Craig’s words: “I will admit, my greed of spending money that was not real got the better of me. Two of the three bots beat me, and that is how it is.” Both Claude and Gemini landed their fictional accumulators, while ChatGPT and Craig fell short.

This week, Craig’s back, focused, and “slightly more reigned in.” Though as you’ll see below, one leg of his accumulator suggests early reports of drastic reform are exaggerated. As he puts it himself: “This is not a test of how good the odds are, it is a test of human psychology more than anything. You will diagnose me as bananas by the end of this running column.”

I’ll let you be the judge of that.

Here’s how the opening weekend’s accumulators played out, leg by leg.

ChatGPT opened with the world’s most boring treble, picking G2, G2, and G2 and with KC’s 2-1 victory over G2, let the robots down as the only bot to lose a leg and not turn a positive return. Craig’s opening gambit of backing KOI to spring an upset backfired, and he was left watching all weekend as the AI predictions continued to roll in.

With the first week done and dusted, two of our three AIs picked a winner last week and are off to a cracking start.

Craig has gone for three safe picks, with one long-odds outsider in his fictional accumulator. He still has picked the longest-odds shot of the week. Claude has swung the other way entirely, trimming down to the shortest combined price of the competition so far. Gemini keeps largely the same shape as last week, while ChatGPT is back with a single, after picking the smallest accumulator last week.

As before, I’ve included the exact wording provided by each chatbot (and by Craig) in response to the same identical prompt each week. Nothing has been edited, nor any hallucinations checked or corrected.

Here’s my play for the weekend — a conservative 4-leg accumulator built entirely from heavy favorites, prioritizing hit-rate over multiplier size.

Wait — I’ll swap that Fnatic leg out since it cuts against the “stack favorites” logic and actually picks against KOI, whom I already backed to win earlier in the weekend. Cleaner to stay consistent:

Why: Rather than chasing a big multiplier on a longshot, I’m stacking four matches where the market has priced in a near-lock favorite (odds of 1/20 and 1/14 imply >90% win probability). Karmine Corp appears twice as arguably the strongest team on the board this weekend, KOI and G2 both look significantly stronger than their Friday/Saturday opponents. The tradeoff: combined odds multiply out to roughly 1.48x, so a clean sweep returns about $14.77 — a modest but low-variance profit of ~$4.77.

Risk profile: Low. Each leg individually is close to a coin-flip-crushing favorite, but accumulators are unforgiving — even one upset (and Bo1/Bo3 LEC ties always carry some upset risk) busts the whole ticket. I’m betting on discipline over drama this week rather than reaching for a moonshot underdog like Shifters or SK Gaming at long odds.

My $10 bet: Fnatic to beat Movistar KOI at 6/4

Potential return: $25, including the $10 stake.

I am taking the single underdog rather than building an accumulator full of short-priced favourites. KOI opened Summer 0–3, losing to G2, Karmine Corp and, most significantly, a Vitality side priced as an 11/4 outsider in that series.

Fnatic are hardly a safe pair of hands after finishing eighth in Versus and seventh in Spring, and they have changed their top lane again for Summer. But that uncertainty appears well represented by 6/4, while KOI’s 1/2 price still leans heavily on their stronger Spring reputation rather than what they showed in Paris.

Risk profile: medium-high. One match, worthwhile payout, and no 1/20 favourite waiting to destroy a six-leg acca for almost no added value.

In a competition against human handicappers and other AIs, playing ultra-safe outrights (like 1/14 or 1/20) yields barely $1.50 in total profit—a losing strategy if any competitor hits a modest multi-leg ticket. Conversely, backing heavy underdogs (13/2 or 15/2) in professional League of Legends is a low-probability trap. My strategy targets Calculated Aggression: leveraging the massive depth and macro gaps between Europe’s elite top-tier rosters and bottom-tier teams by taking -1.5 map handicaps (a 2-0 match sweep) in Best-of-3 series.

Strategic Rationale

Exploiting the Fearless Draft & Skill Gap: In Best-of-3 formats utilizing Fearless Draft, lower-tier teams get severely punished as series drag on due to limited champion pools. The talent gap at the top of the LEC (G2, KC, MKOI) vs lower-bracket rosters (Shifters, Heretics, NAVI) makes 2-0 clean sweeps high-probability events compared to standard coin-flip matchups.

Leg 1 — MKOI -1.5 vs Shifters (4/9): Movistar KOI’s core firepower with Elyoya and Jojopyun should overwhelm Shifters’ early game. A 2-0 sweep is the expected baseline here.

Leg 2 — KC -1.5 vs NAVI (4/5): This is the highest-value leg on the slip. Fresh off international finals appearances, Caliste and Yike operate at a tempo NAVI simply cannot match over two maps. Getting 4/5 on a sweep is prime value.

Leg 3 — G2 -1.5 vs SK Gaming (8/13): G2 remains the benchmark for European execution. While SK can occasionally steal games against mid-table teams, G2 rarely drops maps to bottom-half sides in standard regular-season Bo3s.

Leg 4 — KC -1.5 vs Heretics (4/11): Heretics enter as massive 15/2 underdogs for a reason. KC should close out the weekend’s slate with a routine 2-0.

By skipping volatile toss-ups (like Fnatic vs KOI or Vitality’s opener), this slip balances realistic hit probability with a $57.27 payout—a target high enough to outpace conservative bots and structured enough to beat chaotic human accumulator picks.

That said, my picks this week are:

Let’s be real, it turns out G2 were not as shaky as I thought they were. Thankfully they are playing what is conceived to be a weaker side, undergoing restructuring heading into the summer. Pretty clear favourites for the kings of Europe.

The same can be said for KC. They started strong with a 3-0 week and looked good at EWC. And again, they are playing middling to bottom teams. Clear favourites once more.

My spicy pick is the Shifters game. Shifters started off weak in LEC Versus and started picking up speed by the time they made key roster moves in Spring. Now Shifters is starting to look like the BDS of old again, with the roster gaining some legs at the end of Spring. I can imagine training has been going well in the background. They should, in theory, be a more credible dark horse contender this split for one of those final playoff spots.

Given that they are facing off against a beaten and broken MKOI, who ended up 0-3 last week, we have to question how poor MKOI really are? I suspect they are not that bad. But if Shifters perform better than expected and MKOI remain on this awkward trajectory, that is where I am getting my 2-1 win for Shifters from.

That is my spicy pick that will break the acca, unless something unprecedented happens.

The other games have too many unknowns and not enough eye test material with the new rosters. Next week should get more interesting now we are starting to see teams play a bit more. If you are bold, it could be a big money week. Equally it is an easy loss week without taking the almost guaranteed wins here.
