Toys for Bob revealed Spyro: A Realm Beyond during Xbox Games Showcase with a short teaser trailer and a glimpse of gameplay. This is the first original Spyro game in nearly 20 years, and it features the return of Tom Kenny as the voice of Spyro and a first in the series: “true dragon flight.”
Spyro: A Realm Beyond is set for spring 2027 across Xbox Series X and S, PC, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.
The short teaser trailer we saw during Xbox Games Showcase starts with a cinematic that finally reveals Spyro taking off into the air. After a Spyro: A Realm Beyond title screen, we’re treated to 10 seconds of gameplay showing off Spyro flying in-game, not gliding.
Spyro’s got a somewhat updated look that reflects his new abilities, featuring much larger wings than he sports in previous games in which he could only glide a majority of the time.
“We’re trying to amplify what it means to be a dragon, and that means leaning into dragon flight,” explained Lou Studdert, associate creative director for Spyro: A Realm Beyond at Toys for Bob.
He clarified that in Spyro: A Realm Beyond, you’ll be able to transition from ground to air at a moment’s notice. It’s simply “press a button” whenever you’d like, and it’s not restricted to certain areas or levels. This doesn’t mean, however, that you’ll be able to completely bypass the world around you to get to those gems and possible secrets.
“One of the things we’re showing off in the gameplay portion [of the trailer] is, we want you interacting with the environment,” Studdert said. “We want you diving down to catch speed, using your flame breath to ignite campfires to get lift before flapping your wings to sustain movement.”
This innate flight mechanic was Toys for Bob’s first focus of prototyping, and it drove how the studio created the game as a whole.
“Some of the things that fans really enjoy about Spyro is just the movement,” said Toys for Bob studio head Paul Yan. “It’s this Zen-like flow through the world, a sense of discovery and chaining your charge through the speed pads, collecting your gems. And so flight seems like a natural way to take that to the next level, literally.”
Toys for Bob has worked on a number of Spyro titles, including the Skylanders series, and Spyro: Reignited Trilogy, the remake of the original three Spyro games: Spyro the Dragon, Ripto’s Rage!, and Year of the Dragon.
It was while making the Reignited Trilogy back in 2018 when the developers first got the spark that evolved into a Realm Beyond. Though Toys for Bob is looking at the complete history of the franchise, the team acknowledge the original trilogy is where the character started, so it’s where they want to build and go from.
“The Reignited Trilogy is where we kind of found that tone, found that character and it really personified who Spyro is,” Studdert explained. “We saw that really resonate with the fan base, and so for us, that’ll always be an anchor.”
Yan said that bringing back Tom Kenny as the voice of Spyro is pretty suggestive of how the studio thinks and what the foundation is for Spyro: A Realm Beyond. They love the character, and nothing really embodies Spyro for them more than Tom Kenny, the original voice of Spyro.
“We’re very excited to hear what the fan base thinks,” Yan said. “You know, every year, they’re very committed. There’s Spyro community day and we’re listening, and I’m just thrilled to be able to just say, ‘Yes, we have been making this, we hear you, there’s a new game.’”
There’s sure to be more details on Spyro: A Realm Beyond coming soon considering its fast approaching release next spring, but in the meantime, don’t miss IGN’s roundup of everything announced during Xbox Games Showcase 2026.
