PS Plus Extra and Premium Get Destiny 2 on the Same Day Its Final Content Update Is Released

Sony has announced plans to put Destiny 2 into PlayStation Plus Extra and Premier tiers on the day it receives its final update.

In a PlayStation Blog post, Sony confirmed that Destiny 2: Legacy Collection (2025), including The Final Shape expansion, will be available for Extra and Premium/Deluxe members from June 9. That’s the same day Bungie will release Destiny 2’s final live-service content update.

Last week, Bungie shocked the video game world by announcing that support for Destiny 2 was coming to an end next month, effectively closing the door on the Destiny era that began with such fanfare back in 2014. There has been much hand wringing since, with some expressing concern for the future of Bungie itself amid impending layoffs and the failure of Marathon — the studio’s recently released ultra hardcore extraction shooter — to break out.

There is no evidence to suggest Destiny 3 is in development, much to the disappointment of fans. Bungie is reportedly working on a number of new game pitches, including in the Destiny universe, but there’s no guarantee Sony will approve any of them.

“For almost 12 years, we have had the joy and honor to explore the Destiny universe with you all,” Bungie said in its announcement. “Through all the ups and downs, surprises and triumphs, building Destiny alongside our players has been a monumental privilege. While our love for Destiny 2 has not changed, it has become clear that after The Final Shape, we have reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2.”

Over the weekend, a petition calling on Sony to approve of development of Destiny 3 saw over 120,000 signatures. It now has over 220,000. The petition’s creator, Harley Casto, said “the desire for new adventures, fresh storylines, and innovative gameplay features is palpable among players everywhere.”

“We believe in the potential of Destiny 3 to inspire new generations of gamers and to keep the fire of the Guardian spirit alive,” Casto continued. “Join us in petitioning Sony to take this leap forward. Sign the petition to show your support for Destiny 3 and help us bring our love for this series to the next level. Together, let’s make Destiny 3 a reality.”

However, it seems unlikely that the game will be made. According to Bloomberg, Bungie will suffer “significant” layoffs in the near future as a result of the end of Destiny 2 support, and Destiny 3 is not actively in the works. For many Destiny fans, Destiny 3 always sounded like an obvious next project for Bungie after the story-ending The Final Shape expansion was released in June 2024. So why didn’t Bungie have a team work on Destiny 3 two years ago? The answer, Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier said in a post on social media, had to do with “how much money it would take.”

As for Destiny 2 itself, while active development is concluding, Bungie has promised to ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today. Many changes in the final update “will aim to ensure that Destiny 2 is a welcoming place for players to return to,” Bungie said.
