TL;DR

  • Tekken 8 Season 3 will start on February 10, 2026, promising players to go ‘back to basics.’
  • The three characters revealed for Season 3 are Kunimistu (late Spring), Bob (Summer), and Roger Jr. (Autumn).
  • Season 3 will introduce a Ver 3.00 patch on March 17, 2026.
  • Tekken 8 has become too aggressive, and the characters are too homogeneous as of Season 2, with Season 3 needing to fix these issues.

The future of Tekken 8 and its place in the Fighting Game Community has been up in the air somewhat after the departure of the series’ lead developer at the end of 2025. Bandai Namco has ploughed on, however, and has recently released its roadmap for Tekken 8 Season 3, bringing the game into its third year.

It seems that it is all business as usual for Tekken 8, given how Season 3 is mapped out, with four characters planned, one for each season, a new map, and, of course, more paid cosmetics. Still, the characters chosen could be painting a picture of how Tekken 8’s meta will shape up, and how the game will encourage its players to fight.

So, let’s have a look at the Tekken 8 Season 3 roadmap and how it will shape the game going into the rest of 2026.

Tekken 8 Season 3 roadmap explained

Tekken 8’s Season 3 roadmap is essentially split into two sections. There’s the Season Pass, which players have to pay for and includes new characters, and then there’s the update schedule, which includes changes and fixes affecting everyone.

Tekken 8 Season 3 Pass

As with every other Tekken 8 Season Pass, the Season 3 Pass will have four characters, one for every season, a new stage, and a new outfit pack. This is the Aurora outfit pack, and while the Season Passes tend to be quite pricey, individual characters can be bought as separate DLC.

The fourth character has yet to be revealed for the winter, although the Tekken 8 Season 3 characters announced so far are:

  • Late Spring: Kunimistu
  • Summer: Bob
  • Autumn: Roger Jr.
  • Winter: TBA

Given that Season 3 is being billed by Tekken as being ‘back to basics’, chances are this mystery character and stage will be from older games, rather than a guest character. The three revealed characters have appeared in at least two other games.

Tekken 8 Season 3 update schedule

Outside the Tekken 8 Season 3 Pass, there is the update schedule revealing Bandai’s plans for the game in 2026. This includes a second-anniversary campaign beginning on February 10, a major balance patch, rank reset, matchmaking logic improvements, rank point adjustments, and general improvements on March 17. This all comes as part of the Ver 3.00 update, which comes with the TEKKEN Dev Feedback Portal (Beta).

Tekken 8 Season 2 had a myriad of balance problems, with many complaining that the game isn’t where it should be, despite how well-received the game was on release. It seems that this schedule is meant to bring back some of the game’s heart, especially the Ver 3.00 update.

What Tekken 8 Season 3 means for Tekken

With the ‘back to basics’ labelling, it is clear that Bandai knows fans have taken issue with the direction Tekken 8 has taken. This is meant to be a course correction, especially after Season 2. One of Tekken 8’s problems since launch is how aggressive the game is. This is by design, since the aggression makes comebacks more likely, and thus more watchable from a Tekken esports perspective. This was a big reason for Tekken 7’s competitive success.

Tekken 8 did this with many new, universal mechanics, mainly the Heat mechanics. This skew toward aggression had many worried as Season 1 continued, but changes in Season 2 began to break the game’s competitive flow.

While many have complained that every character is broken, the problem can be better described as all the Tekken 8 characters becoming homogeneous. The game only rewards aggressive playstyles, since there aren’t enough defensive options, nor are there many that are effective. It’s all about attack, attack, attack, and it’s led to all the characters playing similarly.

With Tekken 8 wanting to bring the game ‘back to basics’, it could mean introducing more defensive options or nerfing the aggressive ones in the hope of making the flow less skewed toward offensive plays. The characters chosen have appeared in older Tekken games, having been in the series for at least nine years, but they might be the best choice mechanically.

In her Tekken 7 appearance, Kunimistu was known for speed and aggression. Bob’s gimmick is that he’s a large man who moves lightning quick, again, being all about aggression. Roger Jr. hasn’t appeared since Tekken Tag 2, so it isn’t known how the kangaroo will play, but traditionally, he confuses enemies with strange strikes and wrestling moves. It feels like there were better options if the Tekken team wanted to move away from extreme aggression.

What Tekken 8 Season 3 needs to do is restore character identity to the game. Someone like Lei Wulong, with his many stances and confusing moves that often set traps, could have been an overt step in this direction.

Adding versatility back into Tekken 8 would help too, and while the game doesn’t have many guest characters, Kazuma Kiryu from Yakuza as the fourth Season Pass character would add that versatility. Of course, with the fourth character not announced as of yet, there is still a chance that Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy 7 can still be added, especially with FF16’s Clive’s inclusion.

Conclusion

Tekken 8 needs quite a course correction, and the hope is that Season 3 will provide that. The update for Ver 3.00 on March 17 could house the answers to getting Tekken 8 back on track and recovering from the mess Season 2 put the game through.

The problem is, Tekken 8 is fundamentally built to be the most aggressive title in the series, so it’s unknown how far Bandai Namco is willing to go to bring the game ‘back to basics’. Bringing back Tekken characters like Kunimistu, Bob, and Roger Jr. is nice, although the first two scream more aggression based on their Tekken 7 iterations.
