TL;DR
- CS2 Premier uses a rating system of 0-30,000+, while Faceit uses an uncapped elo system from 0-2,000+.
- CS2 Premier ranks will start to decay after three weeks of inactivity, while FACEIT ranks do not decay.
- All servers from CS2 Premier to FACEIT are on the same subtick core instead of the previous 64 vs 128 tick rate they had in CS:GO.
- CS2 Pros will mainly play on FACEIT and be part of the FPL hub.
- Both platforms match players based on their team’s average elo, creating a fair match environment.
With games in 2026, we’d expect developers to have refined their matchmaking platforms, especially after running their games for over two decades. But in CS2, the vast majority of the playerbase opts for a third-party matchmaking platform, FACEIT. But what draws players in is it just historic habits? Or is CS2 Premier really that bad?
Counter-Strike has never had a single home for competitive play, from community servers to third-party hubs, the gaming playerbase has always been fragmented long before the CS2 release date, but from the first iterations of CS, all the way up till CS2 premier season 4, which was just released.
What is CS2 Premier?

CS2 Premier is Valve’s new attempt at matchmaking. It was built in order to streamline it more into the esports world, where you queue into a 5v5 bomb defusal map like we’re all used to, but you go through a veto process to choose your map, where you’ll ban and pick until you’re down one out of the seven active duty maps.
CS2 ranks are done a little differently in Premier, where instead of a named rank plus tier, like “Legendary Eagle Master,” you get a CS Rating from 0-30,000+, and the higher your rating, the better. This offered a refreshing difference from the same old system we’re used to; however, we have seen the implementation of this system to be less than ideal, with delays between seasons and inconsistent updates by Valve.
What is CS2 FACEIT?
FACEIT CS2 is essentially the same, however, with a few stark differences. You need to play on a third-party platform, which means using their own kernel-level anti-cheat, which many players prefer for added peace of mind. You queue into either 5v5 Free or 5v5 Premium. These are two separate queues for paid and free play. You will then Veto for server location and map, then join a FACEIT-owned server to play.
FACEIT allows for hubs and different queues to play in as well, which allows content creators to host games with their own community easily, as well as women to have women-only queues to get away from the sexism of normal queues. While in theory these are good, in practice, we can see some of them are very empty and abandoned. I’ve played in the ICL (Irish Circuit Pro League) as well as the Female CS Hub; both of these had many players in their time, but a lot have moved on, and it is hard to get a match.
CS2 Premier vs FACEIT: Ranks
FACEIT ranks work slightly differently from CS2 Premier’s ranks. While CS2 Premier uses the 0-30,000+ rating system, FACEIT uses a 0-2,000 elo system, split into levels 1-10. You can, however, go beyond 2,000 elo, but this does not reflect in higher levels. It will try and match you with players of a similar elo, but the higher you go, the harder this is, and you may see some very uneven matches with maybe a few 3,000 elo players matched with two 2,000 elo players against a full team of 2,500 elo players.
| FACEIT Ranks | Elo |
|---|---|
| 1 | 0-800 |
| 2 | 801-950 |
| 3 | 951-1,100 |
| 4 | 1,102-1,250 |
| 5 | 1,251-1,400 |
| 6 | 1,401-1,550 |
| 7 | 1,551-1,700 |
| 8 | 1,701-1,850 |
| 9 | 1,851-2000 |
| 10 | 2,001+ |
When doing a CS2 Premier vs FACEIT comparison for the ranks, we should mention rank decay. This is not a thing in FACEIT, so once you have a rank, you keep it no matter how long you have it. I personally have sat at 3,000 elo on FACEIT for multiple months without playing. It’s really refreshing that we don’t get punished for simply not playing the game, but it does inflate the number of Level 10 players to around 10.5% as of 2024, when they last released those numbers

But Valve punishes players for taking breaks: after three weeks, your CS rating will be hidden and slowly decrease over time. You can only stop this process and reveal your rank by winning one game. Even higher-ranked players are held to tighter restrictions as well, and players with a 23,000 rating or higher will start seeing rank decay after only eight days of inactivity, forcing the more competitive players to keep in the game.
CS2 Premier vs FACEIT: Servers
While historically FACEIT CS2 servers were far better with more locations and 128tick rate, which felt a lot more responsive, and bullets actually hit where you were aiming, but with the introduction of CS2, Valve has forced FACEIT to use its new “subtick” based servers. While this was fought by FACEIT, they were forced to conform to normal Valve servers.
Though many players would rather grind FACEIT levels on its servers due to the better infrastructure and network reliability, though the facts of this we do not 100% know. This is just speculation, and the feel players get on their servers. Since these servers are hosted by FACEIT themselves, we can assume they may be of higher quality than Valve’s.
CS2 Premier vs FACEIT: Esports scenes

From the esports scene, players like to have their own fun off the main stage. Most players opt for FACEIT instead of CS2 Premier, with the addition of FPL (FACEIT Pro League). This is an invite-only hub that lets pro players and players who qualify through a league play on the FACEIT platform away from the standard queues.
The inclusion of pro players gives the average player a goal within FACEIT itself, so we’re not only grinding for FACEIT ranks and elo, but to get good enough to play in the FPL qualifier and end up in matches with some of the best players in the world. This layers more systems on top, keeping everything fresh in a game we have played for thousands and thousands of hours.
CS2 Premier vs FACEIT: Matchmaking accuracy
While playing through FACEIT, I have seen very good matchmaking. It tries to place the same average elo of both teams, and if it’s off, the win/loss of elo will be adjusted. In CS2 Premier, we see a similar way of ranking, where it gets the average elo even on both sides, while in Premier, we do see a very obvious difference in the amount of cheaters you get in each game.
Should you play CS2 Premier or FACEIT in 2026?
At the end of the day, it only really matters where you have more fun. In my opinion, given all FACEIT has to offer, it is just better than Premier in nearly every way, even since the CS2 Premier Season 3 end date, where we would assume they’d have Premier more refined. However, we see time and time again, it is an awful experience for new players, especially. FACEIT still wins out in all aspects, with better servers, inclusive hubs where you can play with the people you want to play with, and fewer cheaters due to the kernel-level anti-cheat. Overall, you’re just going to have a better time playing FACEIT.
FAQs
Is FACEIT more toxic than Premier?
You may see slightly less toxicity on FACEIT as it’s a paid-for platform, and people are more inclined to be nice, but as your FACEIT rank goes up, you will see the more competitive side of people come out.
Is FACEIT Premium worth it in CS2?
If you are going to invest a lot of time into FACEIT CS2 to grind out your ranks, you may want to invest in Premium, as it will offer premium choices.
Is it better to play Premier or Competitive in CS2?
The general consensus among players is that CS2 Premier is better because it has fewer cheater issues and feels more like the “real game.”
How invasive is FACEIT anti-cheat?
If you want to grind your FACEIT levels, you’ll need to install the FACEIT anti-cheat and run it while you are playing. This is a concern for many people because it is kernel-level, meaning it runs at the system level and has full access to your PC; it can see everything.
Why do CS2 players use FACEIT?
For most players, FACEIT vs CS2 Premier feels like a no-brainer: FACEIT is the better platform to play on. This is generally because this is where you see better players, so the competition is harder, your skill ceiling is higher, and with the anti-cheat, you are more likely to run into legitimate players.
How many CS2 players are FACEIT Level 10?
While FACEIT doesn’t officially release these numbers, we saw in early 2024 that 10.5% of all FACEIT players were level 10 or higher.
