How to fix Overwatch 2 unexpected server error bug

Overwatch 2 launched on September 4th to a plethora of players, numbering in the thousands, flocking the game. However, this had a side effect of meaning queues were huge, and some players were struck with an extremely annoying error message.

The “unexpected server error” bug would appear for players when they were attempting to log in. There’s currently a few ways to fix this.

Solving the Overwatch 2 unexpected server error

This Overwatch 2 unexpected server error message usually pops up when a player is waiting in the queue. It’s caused by a disruption between the Overwatch 2 servers and your own home network. As a result, you’ll need to diagnose if its a problem on your end, or a problem on the Overwatch 2 end.

First step is to restart your game. Shut it down, shut down the Blizzard launcher and reload. If this doesn’t fix it, then you’ll have to move on to to checking if its an issue with the Blizzard servers.

To do this, either head over to the Overwatch 2 official Twitter, or Blizzard Support site. If there are major issues, they’ll be listed on either of these two sources. If not, we suggest checking a site like Down Detector, or the like, to see if there’s a wider Overwatch issue.

Finally, check your own issues. Make sure there’s an exception for Overwatch 2 in your firewall. Restart your router. Restart your computer. And generally take all the steps you would to make sure the error is not on your end.

Overall, Overwatch 2 was plagued by issues with connections on the launch, and this meant many faced the unexpected server error message. However, as the days progress, Blizzard is likely to fix the connection issues, and you’ll be more readily able to access the game.
