PSVR 2: Sony Is Reportedly Making 2 Million Units for Launch

Sony appears to be expecting a successful PlayStation VR2 launch, as it’s reportedly making two million units of the headset ahead of its early 2023 release date.

According to Bloomberg, sources familiar with Sony’s operations said the company is hoping to produce the two million units between September 2022 and March next year.

It’s worth noting that, while the ending of production in March suggests a release date of around the same time, it could also refer to the end of a launch window for the PlayStation VR2. Sony’s official release window for the headset is still the somewhat vague “early 2023”.

Unlike most other bits of gaming hardware, Bloomberg’s sources said the PSVR 2 hasn’t faced supply chain issues that have slowed production. In fact, Sony is reportedly in a position to adjust its production numbers depending on how the device sells at launch.

The company is slowly releasing more information about its new virtual reality headset, confirming most recently that it’s designed to deliver a next-generation experience and original PSVR games will therefore not be compatible. Sony has also shared an early look at the headset’s UI and, also on the software side, has confirmed that it will have more than 20 games at launch.

While the likes of Ghostbusters VR, Resident Evil Village, and Horizon: Call of the Mountain have been confirmed for the PSVR 2, it’s unclear if these will be among the launch line-up or released later.
