GeoGuessr World Cup 2024 to take place in Stockholm City Hall

The GeoGuessr World Cup will take place in Stockholm, Sweden later this year, event organisers have announced.

The Blue Hall, part of the Stockholm City Hall, will act as the venue for the tournament. The Blue Hall is known for being the location of the esteemed Nobel Banquet which takes place after the Nobel Prize ceremony each year.

The GeoGuessr World Cup is the official world cup for the location guessing game GeoGuessr. The game uses Google Maps Street View to place players in a random location in the world, with players accruing points for correctly guessing their location.

The game, although not a traditional esports title, has proven to be a popular one, with the 2023 finals attracting more than 20,000 peak viewers.

The 2024 edition will take place in the iconic Blue Hall in Stockholm’s City Hall, best known for hosting a banquet after the Nobel Prize ceremony. The Blue Hall hosts other types of events throughout the year and is interestingly home to one of the largest organs in Europe.

The GeoGuessr World Cup will take place in the hall between September 12th-14th, with two qualifying tournaments set to take place before the main event. The GeoGuessr World Cup 2024 will be produced by Black Molly Entertainment, and have a prize pool of “over $50,000” according to the organisers.

In 2023, GeoGuessr held its inaugural World Cup, the first developer sanctioned esports event for the game, in Stockholm’s Space Arena. GeoGuessr is headquartered in Stockholm, according to its LinkedIn profile.

Karin Wanngård, Mayor of Stockholm, commented in a release: “Sweden, and especially Stockholm, has always been at the forefront of gaming and esports.

“Having the honour to host GeoGuessr’s World Championship in perhaps the country’s most famous hall feels like a natural step in solidifying esports as a phenomenon in popular culture.”

Stockholm, Sweden is a popular European esports destination. PGL held a CS:GO Major in the city, the PGL Major Stockholm, in 2021. DreamHack Stockholm is also set to return to Sweden’s capital in November this year.
