TL;DR

  • Fortnite is one of the most popular multiplayer games in history, though many gamers believe that it’s beginning to lose its popularity.
  • Despite launching over eight years ago, Fortnite: Battle Royale still has a massive player count day to day in 2026.
  • The constant events and collaborations with third-party franchises have kept Fortnite fresh over the years.
  • Fewer players are logging on for new chapters, but there has been a fairly consistent number of average daily users over the last three years.
  • Though there are still a lot of active daily fans, Fortnite rarely breaks player count records these days.

Fortnite: Battle Royale is a titan of a video game. Released as a free-to-play title in 2017, Epic’s third-person shooter gained massive popularity due to its unique building mechanic, and, eventually, its large collection of crossovers with television characters and celebrities.

Love it or hate it, there’s no denying that Fortnite has shaped an entire generation of gamers throughout the last decade. Though the days of Fortnite’s popularity may seem to be over, we’re taking a look at player count records to answer the question: Is Fortnite dying in 2026?

Is Fortnite still popular in 2026?

In short, yes, Fortnite is still played by hundreds of thousands of people every day. Though it may no longer be the hot new thing, Fortnite consistently attracts new players through fresh collaborations and events that offer free rewards.

The Galactus event in 2020 remains the record holder for concurrent players in Fortnite, with over 15 million. New seasons and limited-time events released over the last two years have consistently proven that Fortnite remains popular, even if it struggles to match its previous record.

For example, the Remix: The Finale concert in November 2024 featured performances by rap artists like Eminem and Snoop Dogg, and it broke the record for largest player count during an in-game concert, with over 14 million concurrent users. Live events, like concerts, regularly bring in millions of active players at the same time, and that’s remained consistent over the last few years.

Fortnite’s player count over the years

The player count for Fortnite has dipped here and there, but overall, it hosts around one million players daily. Taking a look at the estimates on ActivePlayer.io, we can see that the average daily player count between January 2023 and December 2025 falls between about 800,000 players and three million players, varying by month.

  • December 2023: 3.13 million average players daily
  • December 2024: 2.16 million average players daily
  • December 2025: 1.3 million average players daily

Looking at December’s estimates each year since 2023, we can gain a stronger understanding of average player count. Each year has seen a decline of about one million daily average users around the launch of a new chapter in December. However, estimates for off-months like May and September have stayed fairly consistent over the last couple of years.

  • May 2023: 927,000 average players daily
  • May 2024: 1.18 million average players daily
  • May 2025: 1.04 million average players daily

Looking at the difference in player count between May and December of each year, it’s clear that the most accurate representation of player count is based on how many users Fortnite can retain year-round, as opposed to at the start of a new chapter in December. Though player count has declined somewhat, millions of people still play Fortnite every month.

How does Fortnite stay so fresh?

The million-dollar question is how Fortnite manages to retain its player base despite its age. The answer is quite simple: collaborations and limited-time events always offer new experiences in Fortnite. Events are often available for only a limited time, prompting players to log in so they don’t miss out on the fun.

Fortnite isn’t afraid to try new things and introduce popular characters like SpongeBob or Spider-Man into the roster, and the regular variety of live concerts doesn’t hurt its player count either. Additionally, Fortnite’s graphics are cartoon-based, so it’s never visually outdated.

Overall, Fortnite is evolving and adding new features daily, which is why it’s so popular compared to other free-to-play shooters.

Fortnite could retain its player base for another decade

With the recent launch of Chapter 7 and the new South Park collab, it’s clear that Epic Games isn’t slowing down. If Fortnite keeps releasing new content at the same pace, then its popularity could last until 2030 and beyond, even if it takes a small dip in player count every few years.

Conclusion

Despite declines in Fortnite’s daily player count during the peak months of each year, there are still millions of people playing the battle royale consistently. New events, reward passes, and concerts offer a reason to keep coming back, and it doesn’t seem like Fortnite will die anytime soon.

Epic Games is always introducing new game modes to Fortnite, and though Battle Royale remains one of the best experiences, a new mode could one day top it. Fortnite players have nothing to worry about in 2026, as there’s clearly still a lot of fun content planned for the competitive third-person shooter.
