TL;DR

  • Speculation that the PS6 is facing delays suggests that the console may not be released until 2029.
  • The PS6 could deliver 4-8x the performance of the PS5 Pro if rumours are to be believed.
  • There is no official announcement about the PS6 or its cost. However, it may be as high as $700 at launch.
  • It is reported that the PS6 should draw less power, be more efficient, and be cooler than the PS5.
  • The PS6 could be backwards compatible with PS5 and PS4 titles.

Disclaimer: This article combines confirmed details with industry speculation. We’ll update it regularly as new info or leaks emerge.

With the PS5 now officially in its sixth year of availability, serious questions can be asked about its successor. Barring a stark change of plans by Sony, it seems that a PS6 console is pretty much guaranteed in the next year or two. That would fit with the expected six-to-seven-year release cycle for Sony’s console hardware. But what about the details?

While expectations may be high, there’s no chance that Sony will lift the lid on any PlayStation 6 details yet. In fact, Sony is likely still deciding upon the next-gen console’s specs, price, features, and design. However, PS6 leaks and rumours can suggest a direction, and we’ve seen enough console releases to have some thoughts of our own, too.

PS6: Release date predictions

Naturally, the PlayStation 6 release date is the biggest question for consumers and analysts. And with the PlayStation 5 released in November 2020, a November 2027 release seems logical. After all, to date, almost no Sony console has taken longer than seven years to replace its predecessor. But there are suggestions that the PS6 may take longer.

The latest comes from a senior analyst at MST Financial, David Gibson. As reported by VGC, a Gibson report on Sony Group’s performance suggests that “Sony expects the PS5’s lifecycle to be extended, and the PS6’s release is likely to be delayed longer than many expected”. What does longer look like? A Potential PS6 release date in 2028 or 2029.

While a nine-year gap may feel enormous, that’s the suggestion shared by ‘Detective Seeds’ on X. A 2028 PS6 release date window doesn’t feel unrealistic, but Seeds has suggested a “2029 release window target is showing to be spot on”, with the PS5 Pro “to carry” PS hardware to the “PS6 2029 release window”. So it could be some years yet.

PS6: Expected price

We can also look to prior releases for hints at the potential PS6 price. But honestly, the computer hardware market is volatile. With factors like the advent of AI and its impact on RAM, predicting a price years into the future isn’t exactly straightforward. So take the following with a sizable pinch of salt.

The PS5 Pro is likely a sensible starting point, arriving at $699 in 2024. The console represents what Sony can deliver in a performance-enhanced product with added value. However, in 2023 and 2024, the component market was relatively stable. It’s possible we could see a higher price if component volatility continues.

Nonetheless, in October 2025, renowned tech-leaker Kepler_L2 stated the PS6 price could be $600 (vs $1,200 for the next-gen Xbox). They rationalised that Sony can subsidise hardware with third-party store support. But managing pricing volatility and out-competing a new competitor in Valve’s Steam Machine will also be priorities. $700 feels good, if possible.

PS6: Potential specs

The fundamental conundrum at the heart of the PS6 release is specs. Sony will want the specs of the next-gen console to be a step beyond those of the PS5 Pro, but not prohibitively expensive for consumers. Given current component costs, there are concerns that performance gains may be an issue.

However, Sony does have a partnership with AMD, and in 2025, prolific hardware leaker MLID (Moore’s Law is Dead) suggested the following key PS6 specs.

These rumoured PS6 specs are impressive if they can be achieved for the right cost, and should deliver a notable uptick in performance, even compared to the PS5 Pro:

  • AMD Zen 6 Orion APU (9-10 core processor)
  • 52-54 RDNA 5 CUs (graphics compute units)
  • 34-40 TFLOPS (more than twice the PS5 Pro)
  • 30-40 GB RAM support (memory cost depending)
  • 160W TDP (thermal design power)

What these specs suggest, MLID notes, is that any PS6 announcement could herald a console with better than 2x the raw graphical performance of the PS5 Pro, with 6x or better Ray Tracing capabilities (for lighting and shadow creation), and an overall 4-8x performance improvement against the PS5 Pro. Plus, a low TDP would make it cooler and more efficient.

PS6: Rumoured design & features

Alongside impressive PS6 Ray Tracing potential, Sony’s next-gen console could be capable of native 4K resolution at 120 FPS, and offer backwards compatibility with PS5 and PS4 games. That does mean older PS titles will be out of luck, even though a completely backwards-compatible Sony console remains a dream for long-time PlayStation owners.

Further, one additional PS6 rumour is a detachable disc drive. However, it’s not clear whether this would be an optional extra or bundled with all console purchases. Certainly, Sony has faced criticism in the past for charging extra for physical media support on the PS5 Pro. Here’s hoping that doesn’t become the new normal quite yet.

On the design front, there is little to go on aside from rumours that the PS6 design will be ‘simpler’. Often the focus of architectural jokes, the only thing being grasped at for any sort of design inspiration is a purely speculative fan concept design, picked up by Yanko Design in early 2023. Nonetheless, we’d expect the PS6 to be similar to Sony’s recent efforts.

What are the latest PS6 leaks & news?

Aside from ‘Detective Seeds’ suggestion that the PS6 could be released in 2029, which Seeds reaffirmed in January 2026, there is little additional news or specific leaks as of the time of writing this. Whether that is down to delays or Sony simply waiting for the hardware picture to become clearer is unknown. We’ll update you with more PS6 news as we learn more.

What could PS6 games look like?

At this point, guessing how a PS6 game will look is incredibly hard. However, there’s no doubt that PS5 Pro-enhanced titles look markedly better than those delivered by the standard PS5. But, given that we know the PS6 will have impressive ray-tracing and overall performance capabilities, we can assume more CGI-like and lifelike visuals than ever before.

FAQs

When does the PS6 come out?

No official PS6 release date is available, but leaks suggest that it may not be until 2029.

Will the PS5 last for seven years?

Yes, the PS5 will last for seven years. Originally released in 2020, it feels unlikely that we will see the PS6 in 2027. But even if we do, we can assume the PS5 will continue to be supported for a while, even after the PS6 release. The PS4 (released in 2013) still gets new games to this day.

Should I buy a PS5 or wait for a PS6?

Whether you should wait for a PS6 depends on how patient and how invested in future hardware performance you are. If you are upgrading from a PS4, then moving to a PS5 may make sense if you don’t plan to buy a PS6 immediately, particularly as the PS6 may not be available until 2029.

Is it too late to buy a PS5 in 2026?

It is not too late to buy a PS5 in 2025, especially if you find a good deal or do not plan to buy the PS6 at release (although that may be in 2029). However, buying the PS5 Pro will provide you with better longevity and performance if you can afford the extra cost.

Has the PS6 been delayed?

While there is no official word on the progress of the PS6, rumours have suggested the console may be delayed until 2029.
