Don’t sleep on the humble bed in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. The versatile item is garnering a devoted following among fans in the wake of Echoes of Wisdom’s launch on Nintendo Switch, even allowing them to get access to some areas before they’re meant to.

In Echoes of Wisdom, various objects and monsters can be summoned via the magical Tri Rod to defeat monsters and solve puzzles. Among the best of them is the bed, which was featured in various trailers and is seemingly intended to get players comfortable with the game’s echo mechanics. But as time passes, Zelda fans are finding more and more uses for this unassuming item.

Not only can beds be used to traverse gaps, they offer an easy way to regain health, too. But there are more advanced uses as well. One enterprising player posted a video showing how they were able to combine a bed with a tornado echo to gain access to a normally unreachable area, which has some interesting applications for speedrunning.

As time has passed, fans have started to pay tribute to Echoes of Wisdom memes with social posts and memes. There have also been some early debates on whether it’s more useful than the water tower, another popular echo, though the bed seems to have the advantage thanks to sheer versatility.

All of this is an echo (ahem) of the appeal of Tears of the Kingdom, which saw players use items in all kinds of creative ways to solve problems (or build killer mechs). The joy in Echoes of Wisdom is in the creativity it affords, though it’s more than possible to get through it without using too many echoes.

We wrote in our review, “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is far greater than a gimmicky spinoff led by Zelda instead of Link. Its echo summoning is a clever concept used to combine the expertly crafted dungeons, puzzle rooms, and item progression you’d expect from a classic-style 2D Zelda with the borderline unhinged freedom provided by Tears of the Kingdom. This experiment doesn’t produce an entirely perfect result, with a little bit of clunky menu management and combat that simply isn’t quite as compelling, but it’s an impressively successful one all the same.”

There’s plenty more to discover in Echoes of Wisdom, so make sure to check out our list of the best echoes. And if you’re looking for even more echoes, here’s our list of the locations for every single echo. In the meantime, here’s our list of all the rest of the best games of 2024 so far.
