Fallout: New Vegas Veterans Are Trying to Lure Newcomers to Quarry Junction With the Promise of Loot

Amid the hit Fallout TV show, all Fallout video games are enjoying a boost in players. Indeed, some people are stepping out into the virtual wasteland for the first time, including into Obsidian’s much-loved 2010 RPG, Fallout New Vegas. But in-keeping with the tone of the Fallout video games, some veterans of the post-apocalyptic Mojave are having dastardly fun with bright-eyed and bushy-tailed newcomers.

Spoiler warning for Fallout New Vegas follows.

Across social media, some New Vegas fans are advising new players that they should visit Quarry Junction, promising good starting gear at the location. Quarry Junction is along the short route to the Strip, New Vegas’ standout location, so on the face of it it makes sense to stop by.

Perhaps don’t, though.

It seems like Fallout is becoming really popular again and to all newcomers of the series that are starting with New Vegas (good choice) I have some tips for you!

Quarry Junction is an abandoned limestone quarry overrun by deathclaws, Fallout’s most terrifying monsters. There are young deathclaws, a deathclaw alpha male, and even a (very angry) deathclaw mother with her babies.

At low levels (even at higher levels!), Quarry Junction is a deathtrap, so much so that over the years it has become something of a meme within the Fallout community. Perhaps wait until you’ve got a mini nuke or two and a Fat Man to hand before giving Quarry Junction a once over.

For years, those in the know who wanted to hit The Strip early would crouch their way past deadly places like Quarry Junction. Some assumed the ability to do so was a glitch and that Quarry Junction was instended to prevent early game characters from getting to The Strip. Not so, according to Obsidian’s Josh Sawyer, who worked on New Vegas. Last year, he tweeted to say that locations such as Quarry Junction were built for players to “Git Gud or Die”. Best get crouch walking then!

New Vegas fans luring newcomers to their death is all a bit of fun, of course, and very Fallout. It’s the kind of thing players can do in-game with the multiplayer focused Fallout 76, although that game’s community has become known for being welcoming to newcomers. After all, Fallout 76 is a prequel — by the time the events of Fallout New Vegas come around, there’s no nice left out in the wasteland.

As for the deathclaws themselves, Fallout Season 1 skipped over them, but according to the showrunners, they’re a dead cert for Season 2.
