Microsoft has continued its trend of creating custom consoles to celebrate game and film releases with a Final Fantasy 14 Xbox Series X, but there’s a catch… This one doesn’t actually work.
The Xbox X/Twitter account posted a photo of what looks like a custom Xbox Series X, designed to represent an Aetheryte Crystal from Final Fantasy 14. This lines up with the beloved massively multiplayer online game hitting Xbox for the first time.
But as spotted by Tech Radar, the terms and conditions for the competition note this console is “non functional” and “to be used as an art piece”.
This is one epic Xbox

That’s not to say the winner won’t get a proper console, as this art piece comes with a working Xbox Series X too for whoever’s lucky enough to win. It also comes with the Final Fantasy 14 Complete Collector’s Edition and a 12 month subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
The bundle highlights one criticism of the long-awaited Xbox version: that it requires a Game Pass subscription (alongside an actual Final Fantasy 14 subscription) to play. This comes despite PlayStation and PC players not requiring a second subscription to play.
Final Fantasy 14 is currently in open beta on Xbox but launches proper on March 21, 2024. In our 9/10 review of the game’s latest expansion, IGN said: “Final Fantasy 14’s Endwalker expansion brings its longest story arc to a satisfying close and cements its place as one of the best Final Fantasy stories ever told.”
