CDL 2024: FaZe, Surge, Subliners On Top Following Week One

That’s it – the first week of the Call of Duty League 2024 season has wrapped, and what an opener it was. From the all-new rookie talent storming the scene to new brands making their first appearance in the CDL, it was a veritable feast for COD League fans the world over. Following the first week, the power players have been well and truly established, and it looks as though a paradigm shift is occurring this season.

It’s impossible to say what the season ahead looks like, but this was a fantastic opening weekend for gathering our initial thoughts. Some teams have only played one match so far (Ultra, Heretics) which means it’s harder to gauge their potential for the developing season.

FaZe Up – Again

Atlanta FaZe sits atop the CDL standings for yet another year having won both its opening matches this season. First, the team dispatched Boston Breach in a close-fought battle that saw everything boil down to the final Search and Destroy. Next, the squad wiped out LA Thieves, which is newcomer Drazah’s old team, pulling a 3 – 0 win out of the hat. It was an especially tasty opener for Chris ‘Simp’ Lehr, who looks to be in refined form this season – and let’s not forget that Drazah now has a ‘Dad buff’.

Behind FaZe sits Seattle Surge, which also managed to produce a 75% game-win rate this weekend. This top-tier squad boasts the abilities of Arcitys, iLLeY, Huke, and the rookie, Abuzah. That’s a top-shelf team with plenty of world champion-grade talent fleshing out the roster. This weekend, Surge effortlessly laid waste to the likes of LA Thieves and Boston Breach. Many feel that the likes of Arcitys and iLLeY are overdue a comeback, and the latter player had the highest KD in the League at one point this weekend.

Elsewhere, last year’s dominant world champions, the New York Subliners, managed to secure wins against both OpTic Texas and the Los Angeles Guerrillas. It’s worth stressing that both of these fixtures were extremely close and went down to the final rounds of the last Search and Destroy match, suggesting that the Subliners may not be in their best form just yet.

Bottom of the Table

At the other end of the table, a sorry story is being told. At present, the likes of Boston, LAG, Rokkr, and LAT are without a single win. It’s the LA Thieves that are the worst off overall, boasting a win record of just 1 – 6 (14.3%). The team was shattered by Seattle and FaZe this weekend, forcing the organisation to the bottom of the standings. Admittedly, the squad of Afro, Cammy, Ghosty, and JoeDeceives wasn’t looking all that sharp on-screen.

In 2022, the LA Thieves walked away with a Major win and a world championship trophy, so it’s tough to see the mighty fall so far.

If there’s one end result that has everyone shocked, it’s Boston Breach being so far down the table off the rip. This team, which is made up of last year’s champion, Priestahh, as well as Snoopy, Capsidal, and SlasheR, is a phenomenal force on paper. However, despite the squad’s best efforts, the traction was tough to secure this weekend.

The next round of matches kicks off on December 15 – perhaps we’ll see another landslide shift take place.
