Riptide 2023 is going to be one of the biggest Smash events in the Autumn. The Sandusky tournament is returning for another year. Smash doesn’t have an overarching circuit this year but these individual events are still high stakes. The balance of power between the Smash rankings has been changing fast. How will Riptide effect this?
The tournament is going to feature both singles and doubles for Melee and Ultimate. Both games are being represented here, played over three days September 8-10th. Along with the main events, there’s also a minor side tournament coming for Project M! The modded version of Brawl doesn’t get as much play anymore. It’s not exactly one of the all-time greatest fighters, but it’s a lot of fun to see it still getting represented. This is what you need to know about the two major tournaments at the event.
Ultimate at Riptide 2023
The Ultimate side of things at Riptide is definitely the bigger event. It’s got the bigger prize pool at $7,160 for Singles and $2,580 for Doubles. The event also has a larger cast of players taking part, 716 in total.
Some of the bigger players attending are MuteAce, one of the top Peach players. There’s also Onin, a Steve main who has pushed through to the top flight with the controversial character. Along with them, there are also a few other rising players showing up, like Sonido. Sonix has proven Sonic the Hedgehog can still be a meta pick despite where he sits in Ultimate tier lists, Sonido could be the next player to really make progress using the character.
Melee
Riptide 2023 isn’t just Ultimate. The Melee event features a smaller prize pool but there’s still plenty of the best Smash Bros players showing up. There are 477 players showing up for the singles. Among them are some of the main contenders in 2023.
Zain is attending Riptide 2023, one of the top players active right now. He’s coming off some great results at Super Smash Con and Shine 2023. aMSa is also going to be the tournament, one of the other Melee players who might be able to beat out Zain here. Plus, there’s players like KoDoRiN and Plup attending too.
Riptide 2023 has some great players lined up in both Melee and Ultimate. This event won’t be one to miss, so make sure you catch it on the official stream over the weekend.
