Big news coming in on the game designer end for Riot Games: Matt “Phroxzon” Leung-Harrison will be the new Lead Gameplay Designer for LoL going forward.
Riot Games – Phroxzon will be the new Lead Gameplay Designer
The announcement was confirmed through Phroxzon himself on Twitter. He has been working on Summoner’s Rift in the last 8 years and had been leading the balance team in the last two. “I’ll be responsible for the overall design of Modes, Balance, Champions, Preseason and the careers of the Gameplay Designers,” he said in his tweet. “I have large shoes to fill with the previous giants that have held the role; Axes, Scruffy and Meddler. I’ve learnt a lot from each of you and hope to take those lessons forward to keep building League gameplay forward.”
Riot Games has been making a lot of big announcements in the past few weeks. Not only have they confirmed they will be implementing a three-split system in 2024, but the pre-season has also been pushed back to the start of January, as opposed to November when the ranked season usually ends.

Additionally, season 14 will have big changes coming in with the removal of Mythic items and a revamped itemization. Lots of things are in the works which makes us all hyped for the upcoming season.
Other Rioters will also be making moving positions
According to Phroxzon, Riot Axes will also be moving to League R&D where he’ll be leading some projects. “He’s been an amazing manager and beacon of stability for League over the last few years (and will continue to be so)”, Phroxzon added.
Riot Solcrushed and David “Phreak” Turley have also gained new positions, as they will be the Preseason Design Lead and the Live Pod Design Lead (balance) respectively. While most are familiar with Phreak, SolCrushed was a previous Wild Rift Lead Champion Designer, having returned to LoL after the Wild Rift dev team moved to Shanghai.
“I will continue to be heavily involved in both these areas, working closely with Design leads to determine high level direction and ensure high quality design changes,” concluded Phroxzon.
