Recruit Companions

Act one in Baldur’s Gate 3 is the best time to recruit eight out of the 10 companions available in the game. You’ll find a majority of the companions in act one and recruiting them will add to your party early on. In act one, you’ll find the following companions:

Karlach (on the Risen Road north of the Blighted Village)
Minthara (in the Goblin Camp)
Shadowheart (free her on the Nautiloid, then on the beach near the crash site
Lae’zel (near the Cathedral Ruins)
Astarion (near the Nautiloid crash site)
Gale (stuck in a portal near the crash site)
Wyll (in the Emerald Grove after the goblin attack)
Halsin (in the Goblin Camp)

Progress Companion Quests

Each of these eight companions that you collect in Act One has their own story quests. You’ll learn more about the companions as you explore their quests and progress each of them in different ways. For instance, you’ll learn more about Astarion by simply sleeping in your camp a few times.

Find Withers

While exploring Act One, you can venture into North East of the Nautiloid crash site to find Withers in the Dank Crypt. You will be able to find hundreds of Withers by thoroughly exploring the area. These Withers are special NPL and will be invaluable assets in your quest.

Learn To Play An Instrument

If you selected the Performer feat and played as a Bard, you can learn to play the lute from Alfira. You can locate this NPC near a cliff along the east side of the Duid Grove. Once you locate Alfira, talk to the character and pass two performance checks. That will allow Alfira to leave with the other Tieflings if you decide to save them.

Adopt Scratch The Dog

You can locate Scratch the Dog near the Blighted Village in Act One. Please choose the correct dialogue option to gain its trust as soon as you find it. Scratch the Dog will wait for you in your camp. You can throw a ball for Scratch to fetch sometimes, and it can be helpful in gathering items like Potions of Healing for you.

Visit the Underdark

There are 3 different ways that you can go to the Moonrise Towers to begin Act 2. One of them is via the Selune Outpost and a journey through the Underdark. Even if you don’t go the whole way through, it’s worth a visit for some XP farming, interesting story plots and extra loot. The Underdark isn’t for a the faint of heart. It’s dangerous and can result in a TPK if you’re not careful. But a relationship with the Myconids and helping save their Circles from the Duergar (dark Dwarves) is certainly worth your time.

Pick & Complete An Interesting Side Quest

There are an overwhelming number of side quests in Act One. Each side quest has a reward assigned to it, branching paths, and decisions to make. We recommend you complete the most exciting side quest because as you enter act two, many of these quests will no longer be available.
