OpTic Off-Season Melee Tournament Coming in September

OpTic are one of the bigger orgs in esports, having teams in a few major games. They aren’t the biggest in fighting games esports though, but they’re reaching out into that world. A new OpTic Off-Season Melee tournament has been announced, a brand-new event for the classic Smash Bros game taking place in Texas.

The OpTic Off-Season tournaments are a full experiment in different games. They take place at the OpTic Esports Stadium, home to their Call of Duty esports team. In the off-season when Call of Duty and others aren’t playing, OpTic holds these fun side events. There’s where the new Melee tournament is taking place.

OpTic Off-Season Melee

Alongside other events in different game, a new Melee event is being held as part of the OpTic Off-Season tournament season! For Season 2, one of the main events is going to be a Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 event. Alongside that game though, we’re getting tournaments like Guitar Hero 3, and even Smash Bros.

The main event for fighting games will be Super Smash Bros Melee. It’s going to feature a $25K prize pool for the singles event, taking place over September 23-24th. That’s the biggest event, but there’s more than Melee singles here.

There will also be a tournament for Super Smash Bros Melee in Doubles. Along with a singles bracket for Smash Bros 64. The earliest Smash Bros game doesn’t get quite as much play but it’s always fun to see it pulled out. It looks like Ultimate won’t be featured at the event, but it’s always fun to see wider areas of esports embracing fighting games like Smash Bros.

There are bigger tournaments on the horizon soon for Smash Bros, like Super Smash Con and other monthly Majors. However, in the absence of a wider circuit this year events like this are a great feature on the calendar. Even without a Smash World Tour or Panda circuit, we’re getting plenty of opportunities to watch competitive Smash. We don’t know who is going to be playing at the event, but it’ll be a fun chance to see Smash in a different world than we normally see.
