XDefiant is one of the most electrifying shooters to emerge in recent years. For a while, it was poised to be the ‘Call of Duty killer’, boasting a fast pacing, high-octane gameplay, and balanced, satisfying combat. It’s set to launch later in 2023, but before then, it’s passing through open-play phases that’ll give prospective fans a clear insight into what to expect. If you’re eager to learn how to play XDefiant, then read this guide in full.
What is XDefiant About?
Created by the legendary developer and publisher that is Ubisoft, XDefiant is a next-generation first-person shooter that lends itself to fast-paced gunplay. It’s a near-future game set in Ubisoft’s ‘game universe’, which means that the factions that appear in XDefiant are taken from Ubisoft’s many games, including:
Splinter Cell
Ghost Recon
WatchDogs
The Division
Where other shooters may rely on country-based representatives – such as Russia, the United Kingdom, or the United States – XDefiant uses only the most iconic characters from Ubisoft’s history. By doing this, each faction becomes unique and instantly recognisable. This operating model also means a wide range of classes, weapons, and modes will be (and are) featured in XDefiant. It’s a more unique shooter than the likes of Call of Duty or Battlefield for this very reason.
Furthermore, XDefiant is totally free-to-play and it doesn’t have any kind of single-player campaign – yet. It’s a multiplayer-first game, and there may be scope to broaden that in the future, expanding it to include something like a battle royale mode. So far, Ubisoft has been attentive to the community, adding content that the players themselves have essentially asked for.
It all starts with learning how to play XDefiant, of course.

This is our guide that’ll teach you how to play XDefiant both now and when it launches in full later this year.
Playing XDefiant Pre-Launch
If you’re taking part in an open beta phase with XDefiant, you’ll find it very easy to get involved. Playing XDefiant Post-Launch
