Xbox head Phil Spencer has said he “doesn’t feel an imperative” to release a mid-cycle Xbox console upgrade, three years after the release of the Xbox Series X/S consoles.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Spencer said of mid-cycle upgrades in the Xbox Series lineup of game consoles: “That’s not the feedback we’re getting right now. Right now, we’re pretty set on the hardware we have.”
It’s not uncommon for console makers to release mid-generation upgrades for their hardware within a few years. Microsoft released the Xbox One S roughly three years after the Xbox One was released. A more powerful console, the Xbox One X, was released roughly four years after the original Xbox One came out.
Similarly, Sony released the PlayStation 4 Slim and the PlayStation 4 Pro in the years after the PS4’s 2013 launch.
Spencer’s comments less than a day after Microsoft announced another SKU in the Xbox Series lineup: a black Series S console that includes 1TB of SSD storage. It launches on September 1st priced $349.99.
Shortly following Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase event, Phil Spencer was adamant that the consoles are “critical” to Xbox’s future.
