Final Fantasy 7 Fans Think They've Spotted the Highwind in Rebirth's New Trailer

Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth got a brand new trailer during Summer Game Fest and fans think they’ve spotted the Highwind from the original game.

Reddit user Megaflare brought attention to what appears to be the Highwind coming out from behind a cliff in the background, seemingly sneaking into the trailer (above) at 2:20.

The Highwind is an airship from the original Final Fantasy 7 that Cloud and the crew would eventually unlock to swiftly travel around the world of Gaia.

Another Reddit user speculated the Highwind may not be useable in this game, however, as it aligns with elements from further into the Final Fantasy 7 story like the appearance of Cid, who so far hasn’t been shown to appear in Rebirth. The Highwind may therefore be reserved for the third and final game in the Remake trilogy.

“I’m gonna guess that it will be featured in Part 3,” said Cmedeiros15 in the replies. “It will likely also work similarly to the airship in Final Fantasy 10 as well. The airship will basically be a hub for you to go back to in the third game.”

Ionicmoose disagreed, saying: “Looking at the open areas we’ve seen, I’m hoping we’ll be able to fly around high above the map and then land at designated landmarks or landing zones, but could just as likely see them doing it Final Fantasy 10 style and selecting from a list,” they said.

The lengthy trailer from Summer Game Fest gave fans their first proper look at Rebirth in a year and came at the end of a week’s worth of sometimes insightful but more often bizarre Q&A posts from Square Enix.

The publisher also boasted that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be sold across two discs physically, something fans found absolutely hilarious.

This is shaping up to be a big year for Final Fantasy overall, with Final Fantasy 16 due out June 22 and a closed beta for Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis already begun. As for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, we’re still waiting on a firm release date, but we should hear more soon. For everything else revealed as Summer Game Fest, check out our full recap right here.
