Disney Lorcana Still Targeting August Launch, Calls 'Stolen Game' Allegations 'Baseless'

Ravensburger is still targeting an August 18 release date for Disney Lorcana despite receiving a lawsuit alleging it’s a “stolen game”.

In a statement to IGN, Ravensburger didn’t indicate the highly anticipated launch of Disney’s Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon TCG would be affected after calling Upper Deck Company’s lawsuit “baseless”.

“We at Ravensburger stand behind the integrity of our team and the originality of our products,” it said. “The baseless claims filed [last] week are entirely without merit, and we look forward to proving this in due time.

“In the meantime, our focus continues to be on developing and launching a fantastic game in August.”

Upper Deck filed a lawsuit on June 7 alleging Lorcana co-designer Ryan Miller created a “nearly identical” game called Rush of Ikorr while under contract at Upper Deck. It sought an injunction that would delay Lorcana as a result, alongside punitive damages, restitution, and “injunctive relief enjoining Ravensburger from publicly releasing Lorcana”.

Lorcana was announced last year as a new competitor in the TCG market that has the likes of Frozen, Robin Hood, and some of the world’s other biggest IP behind it.

The game, which promises to put players before collectors in a world where Magic: The Gathering cards can cost $1 million, revealed its first set, The First Chapter, in January.

Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter. He’ll talk about The Witcher all day.
