PSG.LGD’s Dota 2 roster at the International 8 was the undisputed best in China’s competitive scene. For the uninitiated, the legendary roster featured Lu “Somnus` M” Yao, Wang “Ame” Chunyu, Yang “Chalice” Shenyi, Xu “fy” Linsen and Yap “xNova” Jian Wei. Throughout their active tenure in PSG.LGD together from 2018-2019, they won runner-up spots twice in two Tis and won three other Majors.
Now they are back.
PSG.LGD Legends, assemble!
Somnus confirmed that he is assembling a new team for the third Tour of Dota Pro Circuit 2023 (DPC 2023). The other two confirmed players are fy and Chalice, leaving only the hard carry player and hard support player roles vacant.
According to Somnus, they attempted to invite Ame, but unfortunately, the player is still contracted with their former team, PSG.LGD. And considering how valuable Ame is to PSG.LGD’s success, it’s unlikely they will be letting him go. Additionally, this team has no sponsors yet, so the confirmed trio have agreed to play without salary for the meantime.
After all, their ultimate goal is the International 2023 (TI12) after getting motivated by the Berlin Major performance. The Berlin Major has seen some of the most diverse European powerhouses in the making, such as Gaimin Gladiators, Team Liquid and 9 Pandas in the top-three finishes.
Hence, no wonder why even these veteran players are excited to compete against the new generation of rivals. Nevertheless, it is the last Tour of the season, so they are too late to win any major, but likely will participate in TI12 open qualifier instead.
And truly, after the Dota 2 team’s unnerving reveal of the TI12 location, Seattle. To watch the iconic opening ceremony led by the president of Valve, Gabe Newell in his flesh is a good enough motivation to be at TI12.
Who are the remaining players of Somnus’ team?
Unfortunately, we had to rule out Ame despite him being the best carry player Somnus could have recruited. Nevertheless, Zhou “Emo” Yi, currently in Invictus Gaming, could be a viable hard carry player for Somnus’ dream team.
While IG has been downhill since placing fourth at TI10, Emo has a reputation of being a mischievous carry player that Somnus’ team could leverage on. Additionally, fans have highlighted that Emo has been held back heavily by his amateur team ever since the TI10 IG roster departed and only he remained.
Whereas the hard support role could very much be in the talks for xNova to fill. Albeit he currently plays for BOOM Esports in Southeast Asia and might not intend on leaving his home region for a self-funded team.
Alternatively, it would be exciting to have Zhou “Yang” Haiyang be the hard support player of this all-star stack. The support duo, fy and Yang, have had their fair share of memories playing for Vici Gaming and Elephant. Thus, it wouldn’t be shocking if fy might have invited Yang for a joy ride into TI12.
Considering the crumbling Chinese scene in DPC 2023, no thanks to rampant match-fixing, these are the several bunch that have not become bad apples. Namely, because they are notable, high-profile players themselves that are surviving well off streaming without their professional Dota 2 career.
