Overwatch Season 4 has just hit the game! It’s a whole new Chapter for Overwatch 2, new Hero, new balancing changes, and loads of maps are getting a refresh with new lighting. One of the Overwatch 4 changes hasn’t proved too popular though. If you’re jumping in to see how the new Overwatch Hero plays, you might be a lower OW rank than previously.
If you’ve been grinding in Overwatch 2, the last season’s more generous ranking system might have gotten you higher up. Even if you began with one of the best heroes for beginners in Overwatch 2, over four seasons you might have gotten pretty high by far! That’s until Blizzard stepped in. Blizzard may have overcorrected here! The Overwatch 2 Season 4 Ranked mode has had an alteration, and you might be a fair bit below where you thought you’d be.
Overwatch Season 4 Ranked Changes
The Overwatch ranks are getting moved around for the Season 4 update. Each rank is divided into skill tier divisions numbered one to five. Blizzard has decided the new ranks for players not based on the skill tier division though. Instead, it’s MMR. That’s Matchmaking Rating. It’s the internal matchmaking rank that decides which skill-level players you’re in the game with.
This means your new rank isn’t going to match your old one. A lot of players have dropped down by an entire rank this time! While frustrating, this does better reflect how the matchmaking works for the game. The Overwatch Season 4 Ranked changes are bringing your visible rank closer in line to where Blizzard thinks your true skill level lies.
Some fans have had a frustrating time jumping back in. It’s never nice losing progress. Especially if you’ve spent four seasons grinding your way up to Grandmaster. There will be plenty of new content coming to Overwatch over the new few weeks though. Players have a lot of reasons to be jumping in regularly and trying to grind their rank back to where it was. Watch out for Overwatch news and the patches to keep on top of all of the Hero changes to the game.
